Moving from NYC to Austin has come with a lot of culture shock. Only now, (almost) 3 years of living here, am I starting to feel roots grow but there are still times that I long for my old city. It's the energy that skips down the grid, the smells of overcooked hot dogs and roasted nuts (both of which you avoid with a little experience), the rumbling underground and go-go-quick attitude that slaps you in the face as you step around the tourists.
As Joan Didion once wrote, "I do not mean "love" in any colloquial way, I mean that I was in love with the city, the way you love the first person who ever touches you and you never love anyone quite that way again."
Alas, Austin has grown on me, particularly because of the amazing people I get to collaborate and work with daily. This city elopement with brought it home for me. The mixture of my two worlds, towering buildings, buzzing cars, love, flowers, celebration whistles and hand waves, as we strolled downtown. Suddenly, I started to feel comfort as if this city knew exactly what I needed on that (very) hot July evening.
