We're honored and thrilled to welcome back Jazz Piano Master Benny Green to the University of Texas on Wednesday, August 28th, from 12:00pm-1:30pm in the Jazz Room (MRH 6.248) at the Butler School of Music. The "uncrowned trumpet king" - Art Blakey

Did you know that jazz legend Kenny Dorham grew up in Austin?

Born in Fairfield, Texas, he grew up on East 11th street before moving on to NYC where he became one of the most significant trumpet players of the late 40's, 50's and 60's, playing with Charlie Parker's Quintet, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Joe Henderson's Quintet to name a few. He also of course has numerous sides under his own name on the Blue Note, Riverside and SteepleChase record labels.

Professor Mike Sailors, along with UT alums Elias Haslanger (BM) (BM), Daniel Dufour (BM), David Mesquitic (current DMA) and Ryan Hagler (current DMA) frequently pay homage to this great hero of music in their performances. Here, they play one of Mr. Dorham's classic Blue Note inspired compositions, "Sao Paulo", recorded at Monks Jazz.

TODAY 4/26 12:00pm - Tune in to KMFA radio to hear AIME preform live!

Led by professor John Fremgen, The Alternative Improvisation Music Ensemble, is a select jazz ensemble of six to ten members performing unique repertoire that encompasses a wide variety of styles. Emphasizing extended improvisation, members of the ensemble compose the music specifically for the group’s instrumentation. Recent projects include the “Jazz at the Blanton” concert series, where Butler School jazz composers create music for AIME based on exhibits at the university's Blanton Museum of Art, and regular appearances at the Elephant Room jazz club.
AIME was the 2018 Graduate Student Jazz Combo Downbeat Magazine Student Recording Awards winner.

Please join us in welcoming Sean Michael Giddings to our Butler School faculty, who will teach jazz piano beginning in fall, 2022.

“I am thrilled to be part of the world-class faculty at the Butler School of Music! I look forward to hearing my students grow and clarify their own voices as players, composers, and arrangers,” he said.

Sean is a pianist, guitarist, singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer. Born and raised in Kansas City, Sean now resides in Austin, Texas. He currently tours with both Christopher Cross and Pat Green. He has also toured and performed with Eric Johnson, Alejandro Escovedo, Cory Morrow, Wade Bowen, Mary Wilson, and the BoDeans.

As a studio musician, Giddings has appeared on recordings with Tanya Tucker, Kris Kristofferson, Houndmouth, Brad Cook, Donald Fagen, John Forté, Josh Abbott, and Whiskey Myers. Sean co-produced Aubrey Logan’s album “Standard” which debuted on iTunes at #1 on the jazz charts. Sean’s piano playing can be heard on Daniel Hart’s film score for “The Old Man and the Gun” starring Robert Redford. Sean wrote and produced Pat Green’s 2019 single “Leaving My Leaving.”

Sean’s debut jazz album “Red Willow” was released in June 2021 on the Seattle-based label Origin Records. Featuring long-time collaborators Sam Pankey on bass and Daniel Dufour on drums, Sean composed, produced, mixed, and mastered the album from his home studio, Red Willow Studios. His pop single with Christopher Cross, “Sign Me Up”, was released in November 2021. Sean endorses Nord keyboards and JH Audio in-ear monitors.

“I had lots of fun making these with some of my favorite musicians and closest friends,” Sean said.
