Meet Daniel Kim, the next featured composer in this week’s CLUTCH Composer Countdown!

Daniel is a composer who strives to write in a variety of styles. His works draw influence from various composers and eras like Korngold, Prokofiev, Hisaishi, and Larkin. He is a member of the Asian Memory Project, where he writes and arranges music for Asian-inspired events.

Daniel’s composition “Hahoetal - 3. Scholar & 11. Finale” for string quartet will be performed this Wednesday at the final CLUTCH concert of the 2022-2023 season.

About the piece, Daniel writes: “Hahoetal is a work for string ensemble based on the 9 traditional Korean masks of the same name. The 3rd mask, the scholar, plays on the idea of a conceited ‘learnèd’ person by presenting a fugue that doesn't quite follow the rules. The finale, No. 11, recaps all the previous movements by combining all the mask characters' tunes into one piece.”

Discover “Hahoetal” and other new pieces at this Wednesday’s CLUTCH Concert.

Meet Alex Shawver, a composer and educator based in Austin, Texas, and the next composer in this week’s CLUTCH Composer Countdown!

Born and raised in Wichita Falls, he is a proud Tejano and band kid at heart.
Influences on his compositional style range from the French Impressionists to living American composers associated with Minimalism and post-Minimalism. He writes that “his works are usually inspired by visual art, nature, politics, or some unfortunate combination of these things”.

Alex’s “Bolero & Cumbia” for viola and piano will be featured on this Wednesday’s CLUTCH Concert.

About the piece, Alex writes: “These two short pieces are part of a larger Tejano dance suite in progress. The Bolero is a passionate ballad where the piano emulates a gently strumming guitar and drums. The Cumbia is a favorite dance of mine, and in this one the viola rhythm and bow technique is inspired by a guira, a loud scraped metal instrument ubiquitous in Tex-Mex music.”

Come hear “Bolero & Cumbia” and other exciting new pieces on this Wednesday’s CLUTCH Concert in UT Austin’s Bates Recital Hall at 7:30pm.

Meet Joel Laviolette — composer, educator, instrument builder, and the next featured composer on this week’s CLUTCH Composer Countdown!

Joel’s musical experience spans genres and crosses borders, weaving in elementsfrom electronica to African marimba and mbira traditions. As an internationally recognized expert on Zimbabwean mbira music, Joel has been featured on NPR, and he has been published in Percussive Notes, Mbira Music: Structures and Processes and other journals.

Joel’s solo piano composition “Winter” will be featured on this Wednesday’s CLUTCH concert.

Joel writes: “Those of us in Texas know that Winter can hold many different emotions. One day, we may be swimming in Barton Springs, and the next day (or week) we may be stuck in out house with no water and electricity and no ability to move due to the ice. This song explores the many dimensions and emotions that winter may bring to us. The storms will always come, but may they always pass you by safely.”

Come hear Joel’s music and more in the final CLUTCH Concert of the 2022-2023 year, this Wednesday, March 29th at 7:30pm in UT Austin’s Bates Recital Hall.

Meet Sebastian Zhang, the next composer on the CLUTCH Composer Countdown!

Unapologetically embracing the electric nostalgia of a younger generation, Sebastian Zhang (b. 2003) is a composer-percussionist influenced by the modern chiptune scene, jazzy video game music, and upbeat anime soundtracks. His music draws upon scenes of everyday life—from chasing tadpoles to memories of cartoon ice cream—and how they echo grander themes of merry wonder and existentialist hope.

Sebatian’s piece “Snapdragon” for solo marimba will be featured on this Wednesday’s CLUTCH concert.

Sebastian writes: “The snapdragon is a type of flower that, when squeezed from the side, looks like a dragon opening and closing its mouth. Unlike normal dragons, snapdragons have no teeth, and their bites are the results of playful humans toying around with them, rather than out of any sort of malice. Snapdragon was written about this idea of lighthearted, merry ferocity.”

Come to the CLUTCH Concert this Wednesday, March 29th at 7:30pm in UT Austin’s Bates Recital Hall to hear “Snapdragon” and more.

Kicking off our CLUTCH Composer Countdown is Phang Jun Leng!

Jun Leng (Jay) Phang is a budding composer from Singapore. He frequently composes works which are inspired by other forms of art or literature, such as paintings, photos, stories, or natural wonders. His style draws from the likes of Romantic composers of old, including Strauss, Mahler, and Tchaikovsky, though he has been trying to widen his aural palette by incorporating elements from various 20th-century composers. In his music, he aims to explore textural and coloristic possibilities, creating mini soundscapes throughout his music.

For CLUTCH, Jun Leng has written a beautiful piece for mixed ensemble called "Sunset of the Colorado River." About the piece, he writes: "This piece aims to capture the sunset over Austin's Colorado River. Among my many walks there in the evening I was always enraptured by the striking colours in the sky which changed as the sun set and I sought to capture that in music."

Come join us next Wednesday and take in this scenic soundscape!

Here to conclude our CLUTCH Composer Countdown Eleganza Extravaganza is Tanner Jones!

Tanner Jones (he/him, b. 1998) is a composer, multimedia artist, and improviser whose work explores saturation and liminality. His music has been performed and recorded by Jay Campbell of JACK Quartet, the NouLou Chamber Players, the Murray State University Concert Choir and Brass Choir, and the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra. Tanner is the winner of the KMEA Collegiate Composition Competition and the Dr. T.Y. Huang and Mrs. Mary Huang Commission Competition. His music has been presented at NSEME, the SPLICE Institute, New Music on the Bayou, and the University of Louisville New Music Festival, with an upcoming performance at the SEAMUS National Conference.

About his piece, an exciting work for interactive electronics, lights, and tenor saxophone, Tanner writes: “The ‘lavender scare,’ as it has become known, was a moral panic tied to McCarthyism and the red scare in the mid-twentieth century that led to the prohibition, firing, and public outing of q***r people working in the U.S. federal government. ‘lavender scare 1953’ reflects upon the rage, panic, and exhaustion that comes from the silencing and suppression of voices.”

We have a very strong program this cycle; we hope to see you there!

Our penultimate composer on the CLUTCH Composer Countdown is Gabriel Araújo!

Interested by the possible dialogues between popular and concert music, Gabriel works on questions of intertextuality and metaphors as creative forces, such as the musical model-ing of poetic images evoked in a popular song. He is especially motivated by ideals of re-construction and recomposition, deformation and juxtaposition of these materials inspired by other creations.

Gabriel’s piece, SAW, is a noisy and innovative fixed media work. About SAW, Gabriel simply writes, “A hyperreal space of bees, engines and saw waves.” A rather cryptic and concise program indeed!

Don’t bee a stranger; come to CLUTCH and take in some really cool sounds!

In about a week, we’ll be having our third CLUTCH concert of the year, as part of our series dedicated to providing a platform for UT composers to share their music with the world! Kicking off our CLUTCH Composer Countdown is Sebastian Zhang!

Sebastian wrote a charming work called “Feline Abstraction” for drum set, found percussion, and tape. The piece explores the idea of seeing the world through a kitten’s eyes, specifically following a cat named Udon (or “Doo Doo”); his hobbies include hiding behind corners to jumpscare humans, climbing up tall objects and not quite knowing how to come back down, and observing the world around him.

Don’t miss this whimsical experience!

Our penultimate composer on our CLUTCH Composer Countdown is Nick Hernandez!

Nick Hernandez is a first year student composer that grew up gigging in Austin performing in a multitude of genres from Thrash Metal to Cocktail Jazz. Though his listening discography is diverse, he strives for that diversity to shine through his work. Nick also draws inspiration heavily from film, and loves to create a scene with his music. He believes that everyone has a story to tell, and hopes that listening to his work allows you to develop your own narrative.

For CLUTCH, Nick has prepared for us “With Copper Pots” a work with a very interesting instrumentation: Piano, Cello, Trombone, Flute, Percussion (Including Copper Pots). And, the program is very interesting: “With Copper Pots tells the tale of a small town murderer that got away. The only evidence found, bloody Copper Pots.”

Next up on the concert will be Joel Laviolette!

Joel Laviolette is a composer, educator, builder and performer based in Austin, Texas. His musical experience spans genres and crosses borders, weaving in elements from electronica to African marimba and mbira traditions. On any given night, Joel may be found directing a marimba orchestra, coding the visuals for a site-specific installation, DJ’ing an Ecstatic Dance, teaching a master class, or eating sadza with his friends in Zimbabwe.

Joel has written “Mwana We Shumba” (Song for my brother), a beautiful work with vocals, percussion, and mbira elements. There is a strong narrative element to the piece:

“A hot day laying in the shade of a small room in Mozambique. Just try to stay cool. The spirit of my brother came to me. He showed me this song, and told me it was the song to play for his memory. If I look back closely, I can see there were things I failed in as a brother. But we were young.”

Narrative threads make up the body of his works that seek to integrate multiple factions of artistic creation. Hailing from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, Garza hosts a myriad of Latin American influences in the stylings of his music that coalesce in soundscapes bordering experimentalism and idiomaticity.

Finally, the CLUTCH Composer Countdown Throwdown Hoedown Uptown Underground Extravaganza concludes with Daniel Kim!

Daniel is a 4th year BM Composition major. He enjoys writing music on a whim and draws inspiration from a wide but very specific range of composers including Korngold, Prokofiev, Debussy, and Schoenberg.

Join us in the MRH Recital Hall (2.608) this Tuesday, October 11th at 7:30 PM to hear two movements of Daniel’s new string quartet: “Hahoetal - 4. Bride & 6. Monk.” Hahoetal, or Hahoe Masks, is a multi-movement piece based on the masks used in the “Hahoe special ritual drama to the gods”.

4. "Bride" begins with ceremonial music intended for a wedding. It is joyous and lively moment of celebration which is followed by an intimate scene of the newlyweds enjoying their honeymoon.

6. The monk is depicted as a religious fellow who is troubled and attempting to rediscover their faith. Therefore, this movement emphasizes turmoil, reaching towards the heavans, and makes frequent use of plagal cadences.

We hope to see you there tonight!

Camilo will be sharing with you an intricate and conceptual piece that they hope will push the limits of what you expect from the concert hall. About their piece, “zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz,” Camilo writes: “This piece is a collective exploration between performers and attendees on the permissibility of pursuing rest in various spaces. Using sound as a medium through which to connect resting and restless bodies, we confront and meditate on questions of space, location, permissibility, discomfort and stillness.” Come to CLUTCH and partake in this novel experience!

Introducing Paul Oancea!

Paul Oancea is a pianist and composer who is in his third year studying neuroscience. While he loves the incredible music of Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Scriabin, he is also extremely interested in the ways that people process rhythm, harmony, and their expectations of musical experience. These interests inform both Paul's compositional style and the research fields he works in. As a Romanian immigrant, Paul tries to incorporate traditional Romanian rhythms and melodies into his works, whether they be from the church or the village. He has studied under Donald Grantham and is currently studying composition under Russell Podgorsek.

Paul will be performing his new piece “Sonatine for Prepared Piano.” In it, he will explore themes of omission, experimentation, and musical expectations by inserting various objects into the piano strings and omitting the note “E” from the piece, which is a pivotal tone in its key. Don’t miss it!
