Here to conclude our CLUTCH Composer Countdown Eleganza Extravaganza is Tanner Jones!
Tanner Jones (he/him, b. 1998) is a composer, multimedia artist, and improviser whose work explores saturation and liminality. His music has been performed and recorded by Jay Campbell of JACK Quartet, the NouLou Chamber Players, the Murray State University Concert Choir and Brass Choir, and the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra. Tanner is the winner of the KMEA Collegiate Composition Competition and the Dr. T.Y. Huang and Mrs. Mary Huang Commission Competition. His music has been presented at NSEME, the SPLICE Institute, New Music on the Bayou, and the University of Louisville New Music Festival, with an upcoming performance at the SEAMUS National Conference.
About his piece, an exciting work for interactive electronics, lights, and tenor saxophone, Tanner writes: “The ‘lavender scare,’ as it has become known, was a moral panic tied to McCarthyism and the red scare in the mid-twentieth century that led to the prohibition, firing, and public outing of q***r people working in the U.S. federal government. ‘lavender scare 1953’ reflects upon the rage, panic, and exhaustion that comes from the silencing and suppression of voices.”
We have a very strong program this cycle; we hope to see you there!
