Here is a quick list of important items to stash in your bag, based on some of the top items my nearlyweds are searching for on the wedding day. šŸ‘‡

1ļøāƒ£ Water bottles. As a planner and event manager, I arrive to the wedding suite with a cooler of 8 oz. water bottles to greet the wedding party and nearlyweds. It’s important to stay hydrated! It can be hotter than you might expect in the getting ready rooms.

2ļøāƒ£ Touch-up makeup is important for anyone having makeup done on the day. Bring any essentials that you might need, such as concealer, lipstick, or mascara should be packed in a cosmetic bag that is easily accessible.

3ļøāƒ£ A full invitation suite. Having your wedding stationery is a great flat lay opportunity for your photographer — they can lay out the invitations on a table or another beautiful surface and photograph them.

4ļøāƒ£ Granola bars or protein bars. I can’t tell you the number of times someone in the wedding party is feeling lightheaded or needs to stabilize their blood sugar level. Having little snacks around is super important because there may be a span of many hours where no one is eating!

5ļøāƒ£ Gum or flossers. Straightforward — You want good breath, and you don’t want anything in your teeth!

This is just the beginning and there are more items I suggest to have available on your wedding day. I bring a wedding emergency kit that includes these and much more.

If you’re planning to DIY, make sure you spend some time brainstorming what you want to bring.

If you need help with this or anything wedding related, reach out via the link in my bio to connect. I offer 30 minute consultations if you’re looking for advice but don’t need a full planning or management package.

I can help break down your plans or tasks into actionable steps.

ā€œOn our wedding day, Sara and Elise came early in the day, and we were struck by how friendly and genuine they were, and how well they worked with all the people they were meeting for the first time!ā€

Honestly, Flavia and Jeremy, we were honored to be part of your celebration. Your thoughtfully planned wedding was a joy to coordinate and DJ.

✨

Flavia + Jeremy married in a lush private yard surrounded by loving family and friends.

Let’s set the tone: It’s a warm Saturday in mid-June. Cicadas buzz and birds chirp in the distance. You close your eyes and the warmth of the sun embraces your eyelids.

Laughter and cheers emanate from the family home and echo through the forest as friends gather as the wedding party. Chloe, a family dog, prances happily around the yard, dressed in a wedding veil. Happiness abounds as wedding vendors arrive to set up and refine their equipment. A solar powered battery runs a Bose sound system in an off-the-grid ceremony location.

A peaceful backyard ceremony begins. A couple so in love stands under a chuppah that was made and decorated personally. Tears of joy stream without abandon.

The celebration transitions across the property, where bright glasses of Aperol Spritz await. Friends of the newlyweds proudly deliver their perfectly curated catering. Toasts, champagne, and hugs abound as dinner commences.

The mellow indie dinner music transitions into multi-generational early evening dancing with every age on the dance floor. Everyone packs the dance floor to share a hora. Afterward, dance moves are seen in every corner of the lawn and on the dance floor to the non-traditional wedding dance music.

Would you like to hear the music that set the tone for their day? Playlist in bio.

What do you want for your non-traditional wedding to reflect your love? Tell me below šŸ‘‡

Happy Mother’s Day, moms!

You do it all.

You can effortlessly walk into a room and know what it is needed and how to approach and resolve an issue with confidence and grace.

You advocate for your children.

You provide nourishment and attempt to get your children to eat healthy things. I see you! šŸ˜€

You are a sounding board, a listener and an ally.

You lift your children up.

You do the unnoticed things, like keeping abundantly stocked supplies.

You navigate difficult situations with a loving touch.

You repeatedly play games you don’t prefer because it means something to your children. šŸ›

So, we give you flowers and beautiful things, but it’s never enough. How can we thank you? 🄰

We love you. More than we can say.

When you leave a career that you’re passionate about, and when it makes a difference in the world … it’s not easy. I felt guilty leaving education.

I know this account isn’t all about me — it’s a progressive wedding community — but I can’t post one side of the ā€œI chose creativity vs. some other careerā€ without honoring the other career.

I had two full time jobs that I balanced very well until I met my husband. They were: running a small DJ business, and progressive Reggio Emilia early education.

My work/work balance was thrown for a loop with a *life* that needed to be accounted for in September 2012.

I actually balanced both jobs and a life well even with a newborn son. He attended the daycare where I served as the Director. That was SO AMAZING. In 2015 it was unheard of to be able to walk into the next room while working and see your child. I also brought him to church when I became the Director of Religious Education in a UU community.

I knew that my available time would be non-existent as my second child grew older. I gave my 6 month notice at the church. (I couldn’t abandon an educational program mid-year). This was January 2020.

I didn’t know I was about to homeschool my son during a quarantined pandemic which is likely the HARDEST thing I’ve ever done — it was such a difficult dynamic. I applaud every single home school family and every parent that has ever existed.

I’ll always volunteer and contribute to educational programs — I feel passionately about progressive education. My educational background helped me through this pandemic and will help me through the rest of my life.

Are you a parent? How has the pandemic been on you and your children? … or have you had to make difficult decisions in the midst of the pandemic?

I spent my adulthood resisting my creative urges. I told myself they were just fun things.

I was taught to follow a stable career and let the creative stuff be a hobby at night (I was a trained dancer, theatre choreographer, classically trained soprano, and … of course … a DJ).

It wasn’t until I was a Director at a Montessori-inspired progressive daycare that I realized that DJING and PERFORMING were the stable fall-back careers that carried me through turbulent times. They were there through my many teaching changes and educational leadership growth.

Being an entrepreneur provided me with a lucrative salary to pay the mortgage I had when I was 23. It was a labor of love and a passion, just as working with children was.

I had to unlearn what I believed to be true and that took a long time.

I’m still here 15 years after I took that leap into creativity and let it provide for me. It’s ironic to me that I have already retired from my "stable" career that I trained so damn hard to prepare for and am doing what my spirit and creativity called me to do.

If someone criticizes your career path or life choices, or even wedding decisions, listen to your intuition. You can acknowledge those people and compromise (because there are so many factors that go into plans), but follow your intuition.

Forget perfection. Your wedding will be perfect regardless of what ā€œgoes wrongā€ on the day.

It was a rainy day. Scarlett and Mike had a beautiful indoor ceremony using their rain plan, enjoyed a lovely dinner, and everyone was having a blast in the middle of their disco music dance set when the fire alarm started blaring in the venue. I was informed by the manager that everyone had to leave the restaurant.

I actually had to tap the couple on the shoulder and inform them that their guests needed to EVACUATE THE DANCE FLOOR. Literally. Shock and disappointment spread over the faces of the couple and their friends and family.

Everyone calmly walked out into the rain and stood there, not knowing what was going to happen.

The photographers confidently stepped in and encouraged the newlyweds to be present and document this unexpected moment during their celebration.

The Cambridge fire department cleared the space, and everyone filed back in, where I picked up the music where we left off.

The dance floor was insane after this unexpected turn of events.

My experience imparts this advice: Embrace mishaps. Find joy in everything that happens on your wedding day. Your wedding professionals will be there to guide you through the bumps so you can focus on the joy.

On my wedding day, I felt like I was floating.

🚨Real life: I wasn’t on cloud nine for every second, but just generally floating through interactions, moments, and photo poses.

At many points, especially before the ceremony, I definitely needed someone to ground me, and my Mindful Wedding superstar Elise seemed to slide into view at exactly the right moment, asking if I needed food and straightening my veil. It’s so important to have someone guide you through your day and to be there for you.

I’d love to talk with you and see how we can help on your momentous day. DM me with your concerns!

šŸ›‘Stop everything! I challenge you to take a mindful minute with me today!ā±

→ Set a timer for one minute.
→ Close your eyes.
→ Breathe.
→ Focus on nothing but your breath.

When your mind wanders, bring your thoughts back to your breathing. If you can hear something in your environment, focus on that.

Don’t think about something in the past or worry about something in the future, you’re in the moment.

This will help ground you and help you feel calm in the midst of a busy day.

Okay, now set your timer. Ready, set, go! ā±

All too often ceremony details are planned last … and at the last minute.

My advice: don’t do that! The actual reason that everyone is gathering on your wedding day is for your marriage ceremony! You want to be thoughtful and intentional about all the details.

This is my ceremony setup: a UU altar with a chalice, handfasting ribbons, our rings, and a space for my bouquet since I didn’t have a wedding party.

I had Ashley of Haven Floral Company design an installation around the altar.

I searched high and low for this vintage music stand so that McKayla, our officiant, wouldn’t have to hold their ceremony script for the duration of the ceremony.

We planned the script over many meetings, and I visited the ceremony location at least a dozen times, laying everything out, sitting in every chair (that The Mindful Wedding owns) in this peaceful space to see the view and snapping pictures since I wouldn’t be the one setting up on the day.

āž”ļø Swipe for my ceremony space mock-up pictures AND the last picture from my sister’s perspective during our ceremony because we didn’t do an unplugged ceremony.

I have over five years working in a free-thinking religious education position accepting all religions, and I have resources and professionals I know that can make your ceremony meaningful and special. DM me for more information!

Looking to have a more GREEN wedding and utilize your wedding budget wisely?

Reuse ceremony elements. Have your florist move your ceremony installation, or arrange for someone to move the installation during cocktail hour to be used as a focal point during your reception.

ā€œCommunication was extremely clear from the beginning! We so appreciated the personalized approach that was taken and how patient Sara was with us during the wedding planning process.

Our music and quality of sound was perfect for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. All of our preferences were listened to and incorporated to our special day and overall, it was an enjoyable and stress-free experience - thank you!!ā€ - Maura + CJ

It feels that I’ve always been able to manifest what I need in life. Here’s how I started a company in my early twenties.

I was at a crossroads.

I had a job in mutual funds in between my Computer Science studies and pursuing Early Childhood Education.

My new boss wouldn’t be flexible with my work schedule to accommodate my college courses.

I didn’t want anyone holding me back from achieving my goals. I took a leap and left that job with NOTHING lined up — The Fool’s Journey. It was a stressful time but somehow I knew that everything would be okay.

I leaned into my DJ experience from high school — I had been an on-air DJ from grades 8-12. I reached out to numerous bars seeking DJ gigs.

The week I quit my job I was sitting in the Framingham State University library, meditating in a tired old beige chair. The large windows were painted with a gloomy New England rainy day. ā€œWhat am I going to do?ā€ I wondered.

While I was still in the library my pink Razr flip phone buzzed and I rushed out to the stairwell to answer the call. The words spoken to me changed my life.

A man with an Irish brogue informed me that he was the manager at an Irish pub in Brighton — Porter Belly’s — and they were auditioning new DJs for an open position!

Angels sang in my head — my first DJ residency was on the phone!

This trust has carried me through difficult situations, and I bring it to the weddings I work. My couples trust me so they can be present and party on their big day.

My 25 years of DJing experience and 15 years of wedding industry experience — DJing, planning, and managing events — is a pretty good foundation to base trust on.

I was fortunate that day in the library. DJing brought me a beautiful career and made me a business owner. To be completely honest, though, I don’t want to be *only* DJing for the rest of my career. I have so much more to offer couples.

Experience trying to transition away from it shows me that couples don’t want me to leave DJing behind, so it’s coming along for the ride.

If you’ve stayed here for the whole story, thank you. I truly hope I can work with you and bring you your best day ever.

Reach out. I’ll be there.

ā€œI cannot say enough good things about Sara. She was a huge part of our wedding going so smoothly! I got many compliments about her music selection "so fun" "something for everyone" "fit you (bride and groom) so well".

People were on the floor having a blast all night, and Sara was there with a smile on keeping the party going all night. She made all the announcements we wanted without having that over the top MC voice. She was flexible when we fell behind on timeline, and helped get us back on track without me having to worry. She was also so so receptive to all our asks, and we had a few :).

She let us send over a long list of selections we had for the night, and filled in her own selections that fit the crowd perfectly. She is detail oriented while still be flexible and has a very reasonable price for the services she provides.

We rented the dance lights, which I was unsure of at first, but it helped the party atmosphere and looked so pretty reflecting off our tent. I would recommend Sara to anyone without a doubt, things were so smooth and so easy with her. One of my favorite vendors for the whole wedding!ā€

✨ I loved this celebration so much! Julia and Sean were so fun and lovely. It was my first experience rocking a cultural dabke on the dance floor, and experiencing a plane flyover with rose petals. ✨

Take a moment to think about joy.

Think about an element of your wedding day that brings positive feelings. Something that instantly makes you feel happy. Imagine this part of your wedding day and feel sincere joy.

Now try to expand this to something in your wedding plan that you feel neutral about. Picture that element or part of your wedding and try to feel joy for it. Think about how wonderful it will be.

Now, move your attention to something in your wedding plan that you dislike or that brings you anxiety. Think about how this will bring joy to you and to those around you on your wedding day, and how this part of your wedding plan will continue to grow. Know that anything uncertain will eventually fall into place. Feel joy for the final product.

You may not feel it at this very moment, but wish for joy on your wedding day. Use this method when you’re feeling down about parts of your wedding planning experience.

🄰 Save this post for when you need a boost of happiness and mindfulness.
