Starboard Brewing Company and Door County Candy are joining forces Feb. 14-16 at Sturgeon Bay’s Fire and Ice Festival.

The two 3rd Avenue businesses will offer a chocolate and beer pairing in the Starboard tap room. Starboard is pairing three of their craft beers with three of Door County Candy’s truffles for a Fire and Ice Flight.

Each Fire and Ice Flight purchaser will receive discounts on beer and candy. Starboard tap beers, Sprecher sodas, and small plates will be available for sale along with hot beef sundaes.

Dan and Deb Carey of New Glarus Brewing joined Myles Dannhausen Jr. on the Door County Pulse Podcast this week to have a wide-ranging discussion on the brewery's expansion, the indusry in general, and also the recent spate of reports vilifying even moderate drinking. Dan discussed the cycles of nutritional advice and why he believes a beer or two a day is still part of a healthy lifestyle and a simple joy of life.

Dan Carey: "As far as I'm concerned, if I want to live a long life, I'm going to eat in moderation, I'm going to eat healthy food, and I'm going to continue to drink two beers a day. So, in my experience, anecdotally, moderate consumption of a good healthy beer, made in a traditional natural way, is part of a healthy lifestyle. Certainly, for us to go for a walk in the woods and stop at a tavern and have a beer is a joy of life. to abstain sounds really depressing to me. I mean, what am I gonna do? Drink a Coca Cola? My God.

Miles Danhausen Jr.: Well, and quite honestly, the Coca Cola might be worse for you.

Dan Carey: Oh, not. No might. It is, Myles. There's like 35 grams of sugar in a 12 ounce Coke. That's obscene.

Myles: That's something we also don't do when we're talking about an organic food versus non-organic food, or wild caught salmon versus farm salmon. Yes, I think if we had the money and the choice and the opportunity, Yeah, I'd go with wild caught. But I'm not choosing often between wild caught and farmed. I'm choosing between a piece of salmon and a double cheeseburger.

Dan: Yeah. It's a purity test. So everything, everything that we eat because of our puritanical background in this country, we vilify everything. We have to feel guilty about something.
