CSUB Music & Theatre

CSUB Music & Theatre The official page of events for the California State University Bakersfield department of Music and Theatre.

The goal of the Theatre Program at California State University, Bakersfield is to develop the skills, craft, knowledge and imagination of its students within a liberal arts context. This broad preparation at the undergraduate level develops a foundation for any theatre specialization. Our aim is to help our students acquire the skills necessary to succeed in their future pursuits. The curriculum i

ncludes courses in performance, design/technology, dramatic literature/theatre history, theatre for youth, directing and playwriting. An integral part of a student’s training is regular participation in our season of theatrical productions. As on-campus performances are open to the public and touring performances reach thousands of local school children each year, enhancing the quality of life of the community is also a very important part of the Program’s mission.

Tomorrow is opening night for Country House a ''comedy with corpses,'' and a wicked subversion of all those realistic psychological dramas of jealousy, adultery, murder and su***de that ask to be taken seriously.

Witkiewicz's send-up assumes the form of a ghost story full of surprises, in the course of which an entire family of four is gleefully dispatched to the other world. Don't miss out on this unique and intriguing production, playing October 17-20 only at CSUB!

OPENING IN ONE WEEK is Country House! What happens when an adulterous ghost and jealous husband come face-to-face? Find out in this avant-garde play by Polish artist Stanisław Witkiewicz. First produced in 1923, this drama challenged the rules of psychological realism audiences expected to be followed. What we get is a unique world where comedy mixes with murder and the line between life and death is not so clear?

About CSUB Music & Theatre

CSUB's Department of Music and Theatre is housed in the School of Arts and Humanities at California State University Bakersfield.

The CSUB Music curriculum provides comprehensive training in performance, music theory, music history, and music education to prepare students for a wide range of careers as professional musicians, music educators or a host of other jobs in varied fields. Music is a rich major, where students hone problem solving skills in the practice room, learn to work collaboratively in rehearsals, discover the history of the western world through music literature courses, and explore creativity and critical thinking in music theory courses. The broad skills attained while studying music are the exact skills that are most valuable when one enters the work force.
