Did you know that Bridal Makeovers has a patron saint? Brigid AKA Bride is a beloved goddess of the Celts known by many names, Bride being the Scots Gaelic variant. Her names mean "the Exalted One." That’s why I chose her to look after my Bridal Makeovers business, she is after all, the Goddess of bright inspiration and renewal.

There is much folk-lore surrounding the festival of Imbolc, Candlemass and St. Bride's Day. A snake was believed to emerge from its bolt hole on St. Bride's Day. Bride was sometimes known as 'the Serpent Queen'.

Her feast day of February 1st is called Imbolc (the Christian Candlemas). During this entire month we are honoring this holiday at Bridal Makeovers by remembering the divination tradition of Bride’s oracular serpent since it would emerge from winter hibernation on Imbolc.

If the weather was auspicious, it would remain active, the snake’s behavior was closely watched to determine how few days of winter remained. If it returned to it's lair, then spring would be delayed by a month or more. This is a remnant of which is seen in contemporary times as Groundhog Day.

Bride was said to rise on her festival day. The Rites for Bride have been preserved to this day by the women of Ireland. At La Fheill Brighid, the women gather and make an image of the Goddess as Maiden. With a crystal over her heart, just like a bride, they dress her in white. Bride is then invited into the house by the female head of the household with sacred song and with chanting.

We are now also in the year of the Green Wood Snake which is said to bring intuition, wisdom, fluidity, and change. The zodiac of the snake reminds us that it’s time to shed our skin and remain open-minded and flexible to the new possibilities that can arise.
