Two things: 1. This was a Spanish-speaking wedding, conducted by our amazing bilingual officiant (who is a former Roman Catholic priest). 2. We love, love, love these small, ceremony-only weddings! We’ve specialized in them since 2009. (Want a reception? we do that, too!)

Who else is going to Catersource + The Special Event in Austin, Texas next week?

I’m presenting an education session at the conference on Wednesday, February 14. Here’s the description for my session, “*Help!* Handling Medical Emergencies at Events, for Event Professionals.” (You might have seen an earlier version of this presentation at the Baltimore NACE event back in May.)

If your new year includes a wedding, now is the time to jump on your planning! This is “engagement season”, which is to say that 40% of all engagements happen between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, with nearly half of those happening in December. That makes January a big time for couples to tour venues and book their dates.

Speaking of tours, that’s what we do: tours, and not open houses. Why? Because we think focusing on one couple, one wedding, one set of needs, desires and questions at a time is the best way to serve our couples.

It’s engagement season! Forty percent of the year’s engagements happen in the 12 weeks of the year between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, with 19% of them happening in December alone. That’s almost a million couples across the whole United States, and tens of thousands in populous states like Maryland!

If you’re already engaged, or if you’re one of those “about to be’s”, now is the time to dig into your venue and catering research. Dates will get booked, and since caterers in this semi-post-pandemic time have fewer staff available, they now book fewer events on any given day.

And costs have gone up. The cost of food has pushed catering prices (among others) up, so what, for example, was an $8,000 catering bill a few years ago is now $10,000.

All of this means that 1.) The sooner you start planning, the better, and 2.) because catering is charged per person, keeping your guest list tight will save you money.

Experience matters. I’ve spent 21+ years learning the business, building relationships with other wedding professionals, and creating wedding and elopement packages that make sense.

I spend a lot of time working with couples who have much less than the $30-40,000 that many Maryland weddings cost. There are many ways to keep your costs down and still have a fantastic wedding.

The Chase Court garden is fantastic for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres between your ceremony and dinner. There is both decorative and functional lighting in place year-round, so your decorating costs can be kept to an absolute minimum, but with maximum effect!

We do a lot behind the scenes to make your wedding beautiful, no matter what time of the year you have it, indoors or out. Less noticeable are the things that we do to save you money, like all of the lights, and including tables and chairs with every rental.
