Maryland’s Oyster Restoration Sanctuaries continues to show promising signs for shellfish recovery. Diving into the Tred Avon River, ORP discovered dense and mature oyster populations forming self-sustaining reefs, exceeding expectations.

These sanctuaries, part of a long-term experiment since 2010, are on track to meet the Chesapeake Bay Program's goal of restoring habitat and populations in 10 tributaries by 2025. Maryland's "Big Five" sanctuaries, including Harris Creek, Little Choptank, Tred Avon, St. Marys, and Manokin rivers, are showcasing impressive signs of recovery, with dense oyster populations and vertical reef structures.

Restoration involves substantial investments, with Maryland spending $49 million from 2012 to 2022. Partners planted 5.93 billion juvenile oysters, creating 894 acres of reefs at the Big Five sanctuaries. With these efforts, Maryland aims to enhance oyster broodstock, offer habitat, and potentially develop pockets of natural disease resistance.

While challenges persist, including monitoring the Bay-wide impact and spatset outside sanctuaries, positive signs emerge. Oystermen achieved record harvests, and the recent spatset marked the fifth-highest in 39 years. Ongoing restoration projects and smaller-scale initiatives demonstrate a commitment to furthering oyster recovery.

Kudos to the collaborative efforts of our partners at Maryland DNR, and other agencies for the successful progress toward revitalizing the Chesapeake Bay's oyster population! 🌊🦪
