Looks like there are some problems, one long term, one developing, and one a result of the prior, in ELR that need addressed.
Three of these problems are:
A flawed scoring system.
A scoring system that does not account for target size.
A ranking system that uses the flawed data from the above issues.

I’ve put this out to some of the other MD’s but there hasn’t been any real consensus so I’m curious to hear your views.

Is there any chance we can come to a consensus on a unified scoring system to use in ELR? The KO2M system was fine to get things started but it’s past time for an adjustment.
Many people realize this as evidenced by the 5 or 6 different scoring methods being used last season by different venues. Might be nice if we could settle on a good system and get the majority of venues to use the same system.

The current Ko2M system puts way too much value on a first round impact that is not backed up by a following impact. You can end up in the top ten with only a few scattered impacts on closer targets and one or two impacts on a far target. The Ko2M system emphasizes an early, single, very possibly lucky, impact with no backup impact to prove it was skill and not luck. How about we come up with a system that rewards consistency across the board.

One system that has been proposed by Jay Dvorsky is a 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x system that resets to 1x after a miss. An example would be: 1500 yd target. 1st round impact, 2nd round impact, 3rd round miss, 4th round impact, 5th round impact. This scenario would yield 1500 pts for 1st round, 3000 for second round, 3rd was a miss so reset to 1500 for the 4th round impact and then 3000 for the fifth round impact for a total of 9000 points for the 1500 yd target. It's a very simple system. The more you prove the impact was skill with consecutive impacts and not just luck, the more points you are rewarded with.

A target size adjustment also needs to be included in the system. We currently have venues with targets ranging from around 1 moa to almost 3 moa in width, which are all scored the same. A very simple system of dividing the score per target by the width of the target would even this out. This would make impacts on the smaller targets worth more, points wise, than the larger targets.

The clip below from a scoresheet is an example of the problem with the current system. Look at 9th, 10th, and 11th place.
This is from June 2022 Heavy at Spearpoint using Ko2M scoring. Yardages are 1510, 1669, 1860, 1943, 2203, and 2907 yds with a CB of 1560 (last column before the total).

With the 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, with reset scoring system the scores would be James with 65,963 pts, Justin with 65,110 pts and me much further down the line with 39,017 pts. This is a far more accurate measure of the shooting on that day at that match than the way the K02M system portrays it. This is just a quick example from one match. You can look at any match and see the same trend.

A ranking system that covers all scores from a unified scoring system would be great to have also. The current one in use (Ko2M/Ko1M) was never meant to be an overall ranking of all shooters. It was only meant to be a measure of who would potentially do well in a hit to advance type of match. It is being used as an overall ranking by default.

If we truly want to measure the skills of the shooters and their gear, we need a change to the scoring system, to include a target size adjustment, that will translate across to an overall ranking system.

ELR Hunter Class at Spearpoint update.

In order to make the Hunter Class more accessible to everyone, competitors will be able to use the same rifle in Hunter Class on Saturday and Light Class on Sunday as long as the rifle meets the required specifications of each class. The Hunter Class uses different targets at different ranges and there are only three targets so no one should get their shorts in a twist about "unfair advantages" or gaming. Everyone knows the rule, so everyone is on the same playing field. This rule may change after the first year. However, with rifle and ammunition components being so hard to source and this being a new type of match I think it is imperative to remove as many obstacles to entering the match as possible.

Spearpoint ELR Match Rules for 2024.

As always, I post the match rules and information before the events so everyone has a chance to review them and contact me about any issues that I may have missed prior to the start of the event.

The ELR Match Format for 2024 will be alternating Standard matches (like we use to do with any two spotters) and Solo matches. The matches will all be either Standard or Solo. The match schedule is pinned to the top of the Spearpoint page.

We will continue to do the Rookie Matches every month with experienced shooters on hand to help the new shooters out.

We are also adding a Hunter Match on Saturdays following the Heavy match.

The Spearpoint Hunter match rules are very simple.308 caliber maximum
19 lb maximum rifle weight in ready to fire configuration minus ammo.

These Hunter matches will be shot tournament style with brackets. 36 round maximum match round count.
Targets are 20" wide by 32" tall with an 8"x8" head.
Targets will be from 1000 yds to 2200 yds.

I'm already looking forward to 2024! Get you gear ready and come out in March for some good old laid back ELR fun!

I have a question for those planning on or considering shooting the Spearpoint ELR matches in 2024.
We always have some time after the Heavy match on Saturday so I'm planning on doing a bracket style, single elimination match after the Heavy gun match on Saturdays. The targets will be a standardized size (20" w x 32" h E-type silhouettes). Yardage will be from 1000 to 2200 yds. 4 targets, 3 rounds each, engaged in one 12 round string. Brackets will be paired up by one of the ranking systems or if the shooter isn't ranked, we'll add you to the bottom.

The question is, would you rather run this as an ELR Light rifle (.338 caliber and 26 lb) class, or would you like to run it as a "Hunter" class which would have a maximum caliber of .308 (.300 Normas, .300 PRC's, .300 Win mag, and such), a 19 lb rifle weight, and no minimum caliber?

Looking for input, don't want to be a my way or the highway type. What would do you the most good?

Recap of the 2023 Spearpoint ELR Series and Finale sponsored by Cutting Edge Bullets.
We were blessed with great weather conditions for both days of the Roundup. Mostly overcast, not too hot, and just enough wind to make things challenging. Really couldn't have asked for better conditions for an early September match.

We had a great learning season overall for both competitors and match directors. As an MD, we will be backing off all the Divisions and Classes for next season in order to simplify. Hopefully, the shooters who used the opportunity to try out different ways of competing were able to speed up their individual learning curves while having fun doing it.
The Heavy, Light, and Rookie classes were hard fought right up the end.
The Rookie class was a success with 28 Rookies competing and many moving up to Light and Heavy classes next year.
Thank you to all the scorers (Cooper, Carter, Levi, and Mason) who froze and baked in the scorers' box all season with their eyes glued to the monitors.
Thanks to everyone who stepped up and helped run timers.
Thanks to Dan, Gee Mann, Glenn, and Jay for all the IT help.
Huge Thanks to Laura, Dalton, Garrett, and Carol for all the facility and grounds construction, upkeep, cleaning, cooking and maintenance!
Thanks also to all these fine sponsors for the support and donations for the prize table.
