The Skeleton Flower: A Floral Wonder of Transparency

Hidden within the cool, moist forests of northern Japan and certain parts of China lies a botanical marvel—Diphylleia grayi, commonly known as the Skeleton Flower or Glass Flower. At first glance, its delicate white petals appear ordinary. But when rain or dew graces its surface, something magical happens—its petals turn transparent, revealing a ghostly, glass-like beauty.

This transformation is due to the unique cellular structure of its petals, which allows water to fill the tiny spaces within. This eliminates light scattering, making the petals nearly invisible when wet. As they dry, the petals regain their opaque white color, returning to their original form.

The Skeleton Flower thrives in shaded areas with rich, moist soil, blooming in late spring to early summer. Beyond its striking appearance, this flower also produces small, blue berries that add to its charm.

Fun Fact: Despite its enchanting transparency, Diphylleia grayi is surprisingly hardy, capable of surviving in cold climates where other flowers might wither.

This natural spectacle is a reminder of nature's endless creativity—where even a rain-soaked flower can become a work of art.

The picture was taken in a Church Graveyard at a place called Uphill which is a small village, it was at about midnight, taken with a 3.2 mega-pixel camera phone a few years ago. Having a general interest in the supernatural I decided to snap some pics up there as it's been known for it's ghost stories. It was a misty night and very windy up on the hill where this graveyard is, I snapped several areas of the site and purposely only looked at them when I got home to avoid getting freaked out and bailing out early. Weston is renown for it's ancient Roman history, and I appear to have captured what I believe to be a Monk, in ancient robes. What's scary however, is that if you zoom in I can see what can only be described as a skull-like face. I won't be going back to the Church in a hurry!

This picture was taken in the owners crawl space of his home. He used his mobile to take a picture with the flash on and this is what was captured. He freaked out and got out as quickly as he possibly could. There is no access to it from the outside and it’s only possible from inside the building. We have been informed that strange smells and very loud noises were being generated from that area and when they happened the building grew incredibly cold. They had it completely checked out by structural engineers and they found nothing finding neither rodents or structural defaults. But the noises and smells continued! So they checked it out themselves taking pictures as they went through it…. And this was captured!

My uncle set up a trail camera at my late grandparents' abandoned house. The camera captures three photos whenever it detects motion. In one set, something strange appeared in only one of the three pictures. I’m not saying it’s a ghost, but it looks really unusual, like something straight out of a horror movie.— Said by the Owner of the photo
