Surprise we have sunflowers, zinnias, snap dragons, and Dahlias. Last week was supposed to be the last week for the Farm Shop, but the heat this week brought more flowers! We will be open tomorrow, Saturday, from 8am-7pm and then closing for the season for real 🤣 so stop by if you would like some flowers for your Halloween weekend!
Last winter I drove out to Bernard Family Farm and took a felting workshop with Micah. Felting is where you take roving (all of it is from the alpacas and sheep at her farm) and work with it to make something cool. We made gnomes.
I had such a good time I invited her to the farm to do a felting class in our Farm Shop. Happy Saturday! The Farm Shop is stocked for her last day open until the day before Valentine’s Day and I am up here at the last regular Vine Street Market of the season with some really lovely fall bouquets and Dahlia Eucalyptus bunches. Hope you can make it out. The weather is beautiful!

🌸 What is it? Our Flower Card program is also called a CSA which stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Members buy in before the season begins which funds the farm through the winter and also allows me to fund much of the following season’s necessities like seeds, bulbs, compost ect.

There are four different memberships this year: The Tuesday Tulips program for Winter Tulips, The Spring membership, the Summer membership, and The Dahlia Club!

I heard once that livestock guardian dogs are worth their weight in gold, but the common misconception ( and one I certainly made) is that because they have a low prey drive they won’t chase or hurt smaller animals. As puppies they are excited and want to “play” with anything that runs. As teenagers they are total turds. As adults, they are magic! It takes two years of training for them to be what is called a “reliable guardian” and while my boys are not true guardians (they spend a lot of time in the house)they will share their water with the ducks, are kind to even the smallest creatures that belong to the farm, but guard the farm from unwelcome visitors with all they have. I wouldn’t trade them for the world even though they still get out sometimes. 😂

When I was a little girl I asked my mom if she thought I could ever have my own farm. She said, “I think you could if you enjoyed working on it.” 35 years later I landed here on this farm. This is my seventh season of growing flowers commercially, and while every day isn’t a picnic, or as whimsical as this picture, I feel so grateful and lucky I am able to do what I do. It is the season of potted mums and although we don’t sell plants at our farm I do enjoy growing a few plants around the farm just for extra beauty. Did you know that mums are cold hardy in our zone? Here is what that means, you could buy a small plant this year, plant it in the ground, or a giant planter like the one pictured, and it would likely come back next season. This mum I bought in the clearance section of Lowes last year for $2. Mums actually need a full season to mature into the giant plants you see in all of the magazines. 😁

The thing that I love the most about farming is the steady challenge. The challenge to create, to maintain, to nurture, to problem solve, and to grow in every way. This is my seventh year of farming and I feel like I am learning something new all of the time. What could be better than that?
