This month we welcome two artists in residence, Emily Long and Alex Philcox, two movement artists developing a new collaborative work titled Tooth and Nail. The two BC-based dancers have their roots in movement practice, however, their interests span into music, short film, and installation art; anywhere along the intersection of bodies in the natural world, life/death/cycles, agony and bliss, catharsis and story telling, stillness/slowness, intimacy/kink/queer expression, impulse, and connectivity. Their mediums within movement include improvisation, contact, contemporary dance, clown/character work, aerial hoop, acrobatics, fitness, and butoh, yet they continually genre bend and blur the lines of mediums in their studies.

Tooth and Nail will be featuring in the monthly Vaudvellingham variety show at the , and will also be presenting a full-length performance at the upcoming TROPISM Campout, here at the later this month!

Friday, April 26th at 6:00pm, Miriam (Hacksaw) Oommen will present a performance for her showing. The performance will be held in the forested stage.

$5-15 sliding-scale donation will support the artist and LAQ.

For her final showing, Miriam will present a set of songs and tunes from Kerala, India, interpreted through her pacific northwestern fiddling style.

For the last eight months, Miriam has been gathering songs sung in Malayalam, her family’s mother tongue, through collecting field recordings from elders in the Oommen-Thomas family of Kumbanad, Kerala. In an effort to carry on the family songs through the diaspora, she began reinterpreting the melodies on the fiddle. As an Artist In Resident at the Lookout Arts Quarry, Miriam has been studying Malayalam in order to sing some of these songs as well.

This concert will start with a set of fiddle tunes specific to the Oommen-Thomas family, and after a short intermission Miriam will perform a second set original and traditional repertoire, highlighting tunes she has collected over the years from other BIPOC fiddlers, and opening up to a collective old-time jam. Bring an instrument!

Accessibility: Masked event, outdoors, rugged terrain.

In this hybrid workshop/traveling art installation, participants become familiar with the steps and nuance of creating a fermented indigo sugar dye vat while meditating on what personal and collective transformation they desire to bring forth in our shared world. The insights will be written on small flags, charging the indigo vat these intentions, witnessing the transformation of color as a symbol of personal and collective transmutation. Participants will keep their talisman of personal metamorphosis, while the prayer flags for the collective will continue on with the project, accumulating into an amassing collective art installation. Participants are encouraged to bring a few items of used clothing/textiles to charge in the vat while experimenting with dye, folding, and tie techniques, breathing new life into apparel, consciously and creatively rebelling against the capitalist driven, environmentally destructive culture of fast fashion.
Sulai Lopez is an interdisciplinary artist using textiles and natural dyes as a medium for community connection. Most recently her natural dye research brought her to the Amazonian rainforest in Brazil where she worked with Huni Kuin master artisans from 6 neighboring villages on how to colorfast their home grown and spun cotton thread using all jungle foraged materials.

Our third AIR showing this week! Come on out Monday and see what Willow’s been working on during their stay here, including a limited edition art print by house riso printer

Willow Tree is a mixed-media artist and musician from Portland Oregon.

Using many scavenged and found materials, their work emphasizes reclamation and transmutation. Willow’s art is a prayer for healing, and a hope to weave levity and playfulness into the heaviness of this process.

Sewing, drawing, print-making, painting and writing are some of their favorite mediums.

Bellingham/Seattle friends! Who wants the sweetest most foufy of companions?! One of the Quarry strays wants to be your forever bud. Papa Fouf has birthed kittens on the land, been fixed and wants to return to their distant memory of being an indoor cat. Living outdoors for some years, she is still initially a little freaked out, but with some food and patience Foufy is desperate for pets and cuddles and quickly warms up sweetly. Please share, we are looking for a great home for this magic cat! 🥰🐈 photo:

RECYCLING CENTER begins this Friday, March 17th, from 4-6pm at the Lookout Arts Quarry! Join us for a direct-recycling and therapeutic paper-making experience to bring greater awareness to our “waste” and produce beautiful handmade paper sheets in the process!

The workshop will be presented by our current artists in residence as part of the ongoing .oracle project!

In order to prepare, it’s time now to prepare your paper scraps! Separate your waste by color and shred paper into small pieces. The smaller the better! Then soak these scraps in preferably hot water. If you are bringing spells or personal shreds you are welcome to shred and soak in your own personal vessel. Participants are encouraged to begin this process at home, and bring their soaked paper to the workshop. This is not totally necessary however it is a beautiful way to learn how to reconnect with your so-called “waste”. Please remember to avoid cardboard, waxy paper, and anything with a shiny exterior (unless there is a special paper you want to cut up). Dry flowers and herbs are welcome, experimental paper ideas welcome, paper sculpture experiments, visions, and your wildest dreams of paper Magick!

Lookout Arts Quarry is located at 246 Old Highway 99 N Bellingham, WA.
Please park in front of the large warehouse building and enter through the eastern side of the building. You will know you are in the right place when you see the sign, “Recycling Center” inside. Snacks are welcome! All ages welcome!
