I am continuing to enjoy making connections at different venues in Whatcom County! Most recently I spent some time checking out on North State Street in downtown Bellingham. I do appreciate a venue that sets the vibe for an event and Aslan Depot definitely fits that bill! Its funky, rustic decor provides a casual but fun & inspiring tone and means very little additional decor is necessary to make it event-ready! Clients can rent the entire indoor & outdoor space for larger events like weddings or memorials, or just the smaller sitting room for more intimate gatherings like birthday parties or bridal or baby showers. 🎈
Lately, I've been busy touring local venues that I haven't yet visited or worked in, and what a pleasure it was to spend time at Lairmont Manor yesterday afternoon! I photographed events and weddings here in the past and have always been totally delighted by the 360 degree eye candy this venue provides- even on a soggy PNW spring day before the gardens are in full bloom!
Built in 1914-15 by one of the founders of Fairhaven, Lairmont Manor is on the US National Register of Historic Places and for several years was home to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. Its classic Italian Renaissance styling makes it the most unique and elegant venue available in Whatcom County - it is so beautiful on its own that it requires very little additional decor to make it an absolutely enchanting setting for any special event.

I got to spend some time exploring the event spaces available at Chuckanut Bay Distillery last week. Besides their beautiful spaces already available for events, I am so excited about the additions they’re bringing to the event venue game in Whatcom County! In addition to a small rooftop bar with an epic view of downtown Bellingham and the islands, the creation of a 4200sf ballroom overlooking Cornwall Street is in progress and slated for opening in July 2024. It’s a chaotic construction zone right now so I’m not sharing photos but rest assured, it will be a STUNNING space for events when it is complete! Looking forward to sharing photos later this summer and definitely can’t wait to host an event here! 🎈
Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Lisa of and visiting her sweet bridal party day rental in Ferndale . WA. The cottage, filled with Victorian area antiques, is set amongst Lisa’s small family farm and provides a peaceful off- site location for hair & makeup and dressing in bridal attire!
Our go-to question when it comes to celebrating any individual is “what are their favorites?” In this case, our birthday boy was a connoisseur of fine Scotch so a tasting table, paired with a cigar bar, became an integral part of his 40th birthday celebration. Guests enjoyed the opportunity to taste some of his favorites while savoring a celebratory cigar together! 🎈

Funerals and celebrations of life are similar in purpose- to honor the dead- but look and feel differently. Traditionally, funerals are more ritualistic and focused on mourning a person's death. Usually held in funeral homes, churches, or cemeteries, a funeral service typically occurs within a week of the death and the body is often present at the ceremony- which tends to make for a somber event.
Memorials and celebrations of life are focused on just that- remembering and celebrating the individual's life. These events typically occur weeks or even months following the death after remains have been cared for. Priya encourages doing a deeper dive into determining your purpose for gathering beyond the category of your event ie: birthday/anniversary/graduation/insert other celebration here. Back in October, I had the honor of planning a 40th birthday celebration for one of my dearest friends and someone very deserving of an Epic Celebration.
I had two goals for Bridget’s celebration:
🎈 Make her feel seen and heard
🎈 Give her an understanding of what the world was like when she was born into it
Bridget’s expressed love for both cheese and dips & spreads made creating a charcuterie board for dinner a no-brainer, but I didn’t want it to be a run-of-the-mill spread with the typical selections from Trader Joe’s. It needed to be ✨special!✨ So I decided to create a tasting party featuring cheeses produced at local Whatcom County farms! I had such fun visiting their shops & farmsteads and telling them about my plans.

To attain my second goal, I started with the evening’s music & entertainment by creating a YouTube playlist of Mtv videos from 1983. I then asked our dinner guests, most of whom were in their teens when Bridget was born, to take a walk down memory lane and come prepared to share with Bridget what was going on in their lives in 1983.
Goal 2 ✔️
We all enjoyed sharing memories triggered by the Mtv video playlist and had some memorable dinnertime conversations about life in 1983 and who we were back then. Bridget expressed feeling so loved and seen, which is all I wanted to hear. ✨This is how we gather better.✨

One of the easiest ways to elevate your gathering to EPIC status is by hiring us to create a beautifully styled dessert bar! When we are celebrating an individual, whether it be a birthday or celebration of life, we love to incorporate the favorites of the person being honored. In this case our honoree was fond of a coconut cake from the Dessert Works bakery in Seattle so it was imperative that we include it on the menu! We supplemented with chocolate-dipped strawberries to provide a bit of contrast and flowers used in the centerpiece arrangements lent themselves to an eye-popping dessert display that guests raved about.
What special treat would you want to share with your guests if we were celebrating you?🎈
In the summer of 2022 our annual summer soiree was especially celebratory in nature as my husband Chris and I finally, after seven stressful years of fighting for it, became the owners of the home and property we'd lived on for 13 years. I'd had plenty of time to daydream about this gathering and could not wait to finally...FINALLY execute my ideas! One of my favorite elements of this gathering was the luminaria bags I asked our guests to decorate and place around the garden They had so much fun with this and the lit luminaria were such a pretty addition to the ambience of the evening. For the kids on the guest list, I created a scavenger hunt featuring eight needle-felted gnomes we'd tucked here and there. This fun activity kept their brains focused and bodies moving while their parents enjoyed some peaceful time with friends and neighbors - a win/win for all invited!

It's always an extra special event when we have live performers as part of our celebration and this has to be my favorite performance so far. You may remember seeing a young @vincemira busking at Seattle's Pike Place Market or his appearance on "Ellen" highlighting the likeness of his voice to that of Johnny Cash. I recall setting up for this celebration of life while Vince was rehearsing and the way his voice reverberated through the empty venue kept the hair on my arms standing on end. Our honoree was a musician and a deep lover of music so having Vince's soulful voice as part of his celebrations was simply perfect. 🎈 #epicmemorials #celebrationoflife #icelebratedeadpeople #illflyaway
I've collected a lot of cool items to use in my memorial display work but I have to say this vertical display wall is my favorite of all. I'm always excited to have an honoree for whom its use is appropriate! It's been featured at four different celebrations of life and the honorees all had some things in common: they each were highly creative men who died too young and either left behind a treasure trove of ephemera they'd collected, or, in the case of my friend Josh, a lot of great social media posts that I printed for display. This wall was originally built as a photobooth backdrop for a public Pride event I hosted in 2018 (it used to be painted in rainbow colors!) and it has transitioned beautifully into a unique display piece for creating both Epic Memorials and epic parties at home! Note the final photo is from our "Come As You Were" 1990s party last weekend where I asked our guests to come dressed like they were in a photo of themselves from the 90s! I used the wall to display everyone's photos amongst memorable 90s magazine covers I found online.
