Big things are happening in the garden this year! Our beloved arbor—aka Bambi (because let’s be honest, she never quite found her footing)—is coming down.

But in her place? A living willow arbor that will grow and shape itself into a stunning, natural centerpiece. (Some varieties can grow 12 feet in a year!)

And that’s just the beginning! We’re adding a bench tipi, three arched garden entrances lined with grapes and berries, and stick trellises weaving through the large beds in the heart of the garden—perfect for sweet peas and mini pumpkins.

Can you picture it? A lush, dreamy garden that feels like stepping into a storybook. It’ll take time, but it’s going to be so worth it! Stay tuned as we bring this vision to life.

Think you don’t have room for a cut flower garden? Think again! A few well-chosen plants can make a big impact all summer and fall. Compact spaces flourish with flowers that don’t need much room but still burst with color and blooms. Here are some great options:

Zinnias: Fast-growing, bright, and perfect for small containers. They produce vibrant blooms that last, making them ideal for bouquets.

Cosmos: With their airy, delicate petals, cosmos are self-seeding and require minimal maintenance—great for adding a touch of wildflower charm.

Triloba Rudbeckia: Regularly self-sows and the perfect replacement for sunflowers! One plant produces hundreds of blooms in the bright and cheery yellow we all crave. I added the picture at the end so you can see just how beautiful they are!

Gomphrena: These globe-shaped blooms last until the first frost and even reseed for the next year, providing long-lasting beauty with minimal effort.

Marigolds: Hardy and vibrant, marigolds not only bring brilliant colors to your garden but also help repel pests as a natural companion plant.

Basil: While not a traditional flower, basil offers a fresh garden scent and lush greenery that complements your bouquets beautifully, adding an extra sensory dimension to your arrangements.

One lesson I’ve learned? Don’t wait for perfection—just start. That’s exactly why I’m launching a Resources Page on my website! It’s a work in progress, but I’ve already added a Seed Starting - Beginner's Guide for a Cut Flower Garden to get you started.

This guide is designed to give you hands-on practice with direct sowing, starting seeds indoors, and succession planting—without overwhelming you with information overload. I’ve spent years researching, experimenting, and making plenty of mistakes (because let’s be real, experience is the best teacher). Valentine’s Day Hits Different Around Here

For most, Valentine’s Day is about flowers, chocolates, and grand gestures. For me, it’s the day I became a mom for the first time. A day that redefined love in ways I never could have imagined.

Instead of fancy dinners, my February 14th memories are filled with newborn snuggles, tiny fingers wrapped around mine, and the overwhelming joy (and exhaustion!) of those first moments of motherhood. Now, years later, our house is filled with laughter, love, crazy cakes, and a little bit of chaos—but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So while I love flowers (obviously), this day will always be more than that for me. It’s a reminder of where my journey as a mom began, and that’s the best kind of Valentine’s gift.

Simple Seed Starting Hack 🌱

It only took me four years to figure this one out, so let me save you the trouble! Here’s an easy way to get perfectly indented seed trays without the mess:

1️⃣ Fill your tray with soil.
2️⃣ Take a second tray and place it directly on top. Gently press—it doesn’t take much!
3️⃣ Water the tray (I’m loving our garden sprayer for this).
4️⃣ Plant your seeds. If they need darkness, sprinkle leftover soil or vermiculite to cover the holes.
5️⃣ Water again to settle the seeds, then bottom water to ensure even moisture throughout the cells.

That’s it! A simple trick that makes seed starting so much easier. 🌿✨

Winter Sowing Success: Sweet Alyssum Edition

10 days ago, I put the winter sowing method to the test—only this time, instead of using a bunch of milk jugs or bags, I went big with a tote. Think of it as a mini greenhouse: damp soil, sweet alyssum seeds, and a clear/opaque container with drainage holes. I left it outside in full sun, let nature do the work, and by day 7—boom! Germination. Quick, high success rate? This one’s going on my direct sow list despite what the packet told me! Recommended instructions: sow indoors 4-5 weeks before the last frost...that means you also get to baby the seedlings for over a month before putting them outside...avoid this whenever possible!

Why am I growing sweet alyssum this year?
🌼 Attracts beneficial insects (pollinators + pest control)
🌼 Smells absolutely amazing
🌼 Blooms for ages
🌼 Creates a gorgeous, low-growing floral carpet
