George Washington created the “Badge for Military Merit,” now known as the Purple Heart, 242 years ago, making it the oldest U.S. military award.

Today, we honor Purple Heart recipients and their loved ones for their service.

“Courage isn’t a brilliant dash, a daring deed in a moment’s flash; It isn’t an instantaneous thing born of despair with a sudden spring, but it’s something deep in the soul of man that is working always to serve some plan.”
- Edgar A. Guest

I am honored to know many Purple Heart recipients. Many of them don't consider themselves heroes, but they will always be that to me...

The first paratroopers to be dropped on Normandy were the pathfinders. These teams, each consisting of a lieutenant as the element leader, four transmission operators, and four paratroopers responsible for overall security, were deployed into enemy territory without initial marking, relying solely on terrain observation and navigation calculations aboard the C-47 Dakota.

The Pathfinders' mission was to secure drop zones (DZ) and landing zones (LZ) ahead of the arrival of the airborne fighting companies. They utilized "Eureka" transceivers, which sent pulses picked up by "Rebecca" transceivers installed under the C-47s' fuselages, guiding the pilots. Additionally, these transceivers could send short Morse messages between pilots and scouts.

Equipped with both day and night markings, the Pathfinders prepared for the arrival of reinforcements, which were scheduled to be air-dropped and air-transported on June 6, 1944, at 21:00.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is the maritime security, search and rescue, and law enforcement service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the country's eight uniformed services. The service is a maritime, military, multi-mission service unique among the United States military branches for having a maritime law enforcement mission with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of its duties. It is the largest coast guard in the world, rivaling the capabilities and size of most navies.

Happy Birthday Coasties...
