The Estate was founded over 150 years ago by a wealthy farming/trading family, the Dickinsons. Through the years, the estate has continuously been a hub of activity. The members of the Potawatomi tribe were often seen on the land as they headed towards St. Joseph to trade. Surrounded by orchards, the estate itself became an active center of commerce, as well as a station on the Underground Railroad. The current Manor House was built in 1847 and remains as beautiful as it was the day it was built.
In the 1990’s, Tom (a Family Court Judge) and Prudy (a Pediatrician) Nelson bought much of the property surrounding the Manor House to build their dream home on the Paw Paw River. As often happens, dreams change and their new home was built elsewhere.
Fast forward to 2013, Prudy returned from working in SW Uganda with the dream of doing something to help the orphans and vulnerable children she fell in love with. Along with a Ugandan colleague, the Nelsons co-founded the Orphan Welfare Organization.
To support the OWO, Prudy came up with an idea that combined her penchant for collecting, her love of beautiful things and her passion for parties. My Mother’s Attic Vintage China and Tableware Rental began. It was a great success providing school fees for lots of kids and baptized Prudy in the wedding industry. She loved it!
