Bonnie and I both bringing the Fourth of July spirit (more or less) to the airwaves tomorrow night. Hope you can join us: The Bonnie Simmons Show from 8pm - 10pm, and I'll take over at 10pm for Betty's Night In. Stay cool and have a safe holiday!

It's not every year we get to do a Fourth of July show on the actual Fourth of July, so both Betty Beasley and I have seized the thematic moment in our prerecorded shows this week, and we hope you will tune in to KPFA Radio starting at 8 pm and join us as you're enjoying your festivities!

I am so sad to hear about Larry's passing. On top of all his political and journalistic work, he was a very cultured man: we bonded over Proust many years ago, and he loved when I played French music on my shows. In recent years, he would send links to music he was listening to and enjoying, and it was always good stuff.

This Sunday - go go go if you can!

Bay Area! Country singer-songwriter Miko Marks is doing a live performance + album signing at Amoeba San Francisco this Sunday, May 19 at 3pm!

✨ The show is free & all-ages. To attend the signing, purchase "Feel Like Going Home" on vinyl at Amoeba SF.

13 years after her last album, Miko Marks, re-emerged stronger than ever with her 2021 album "Our Country" (Redtone Records). She had all but given up on her career aspirations after she was effectively told by Nashville executives that her music was good, but she wouldn't sell. Fast forward thirteen years later - she crafted a beautiful album that is getting nods from NPR, Rolling Stone, NY Times, WSJ and more. Miko was named to the 2022 Class of CMT’s Next Women of Country & participated in the first Equal Access program with mTheory. On October 14, 2022 Miko released her widely anticipated album "Feel Like Going Home" and made her Grand Ole Opry debut on the same day. The album landed on several year-end "best-of" lists including Rolling Stone, NPR, Paper, Garden & Gun, among others. In March of 2023, she was included in the American Currents exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN.

Go see her at Amoeba if you can! She is wonderful.

I realized too late that I had forgotten to mention this show at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley in Thursday's broadcast. It combines two of my favorite things: music and Giants baseball. A couple of former SF Giants players-turned-musicians in a benefit for Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. What's not to like?

I remembered too late that tomorrow is Pi Day, but Bonnie is kindly covering the 3.14 material, as well as the pastry. Might be a good day to visit the Exploratorium as well, to visit their Pi Shrine.

I'd hoped to get a chance to mention this on air last night, but it wasn't to be. But if you're up in the north bay, you could do much worse than to check out this great show at the Green Music Center tomorrow evening (Saturday March 9):

Kind of a special show tonight — if you like this sort of thing....2 hours of American pop standards from the first half of the 20th century; not always performed by 20th-century artists. It's pretty fun and I hope you'll join me at 10pm on KPFA Radio right after The Bonnie Simmons Show on 94.1fm and at kpfa.org. 💖

12/21/2023

Hi radio friends. I'll be back at KPFA Radio on my own tonight at 10pm, right after The Bonnie Simmons Show at 8pm. I stayed up late last night to watch the winter solstice sunrise at Newgrange in Ireland, so of course we'll start with Tim O'Brien's song "Newgrange" and go on with songs about light, the sun, and so on. Please join me at 10pm.
