It’s a summer of film noir at BAMPFA. 🕵️♀️ We’re playing classic mysteries, melodramas, and crime thrillers, many on archival 35mm prints.
These masterpieces of Hollywood's golden age tapped into the paranoia and cynicism that followed the world wars and channeled this mood onto the screen through the play of shadows, lighting, camera angles, and compositional tension.
Celebrated film historian David Thomson will join us to introduce some of the films and share his insights on this iconic genre.

Made in collaboration with woman weavers from the sea-based Bajau and Sama Dilaut communities of Sabah, and woven from tropical pandanus leaves and plastic waste gathered from the Sulu-Celebes Seas, this vibrant collection of mats highlights the importance of intergenerational knowledge, and the need to cultivate social and ecological resilience in the face of climate change.
