Happy New Year! As another year rolls around, we wanted to share David Horvitz’s “The Distance of a Day,” currently on view in “To Exalt the Ephemeral: The (Im)permanent Collection.”

Filmed simultaneously by the artist and his mother, the parallel videos capture a sunset in California and a sunrise in the Maldives. It is a moment of connection as endings and beginnings coincide.

We can't let the year end without a shout-out to our film team!

We started the year with a sold-out visit from Werner Herzog, and ended the year with a sold-out visit from Jia Zhangke. And with countless filmmaker visits, sold-out screenings, and films from all around the world in between, 2024 has been an epic run.

Can’t wait to welcome you back into the theater in 2025! The big screen lights back up on January 10 with John Ford’s THE SEARCHERS.

We want to end the year with a shout-out to our art curatorial team, who has been making big moves in a shifting museum landscape.

From Gabriel Chaile’s sculptures, made in collaboration with UC Berkeley Art Practice students, to our current exhibition, “Making Their Mark: Works from the Shah Garg Collection,” which will be paired with a high school art show—our exhibitions are curated with our community in mind.

🍾 Here’s to another year of finding and building community through art in 2025!

Cheryl Dunye is the iconic director of the Q***r New Wave classic THE WATERMELON WOMAN and founder of the Oakland-based production company Jingletown Film. Her work explores issues of race, sexuality, and gender, focussing Black and le***an identities.

The latest iteration of our Teaching Wall considers the significance of water in our sometimes-dry, sometimes-rainy (!) state.

These small exhibitions are put together in partnership with UC Berkeley faculty. The current selection elaborates on themes in Professor Greg Niemeyer's undergrad Art Practice course—bringing the BAMPFA collection into the classroom!

"Teaching Wall / Water, Art, and California" is on view through December 20.

Take a break from the rain! Stop by our newly-cushioned Crane Forum to enjoy the last few weeks of Rose D'Amato's Art Wall. ☔

The giant mural is inspired by a 1930s hand-painted Chevy billboard from San Francisco and celebrates the technical ingenuity, labor, and creativity of lowrider and sign painter communities.

"Art Wall / Rose D’Amato: Mission Chevrolet" is on view through December 15.

The nightclub-like atmosphere of Young Joon Kwak's MATRIX installation conjures a utopian world where marginalized people can flourish, dancing under a neon glow.

A celebration of both resistance and pleasure, the exhibition reminds us that reaching this joyous world means changing the one we are in, taking actions in times of struggle, and finding ways to heal.

“MATRIX 285 / Young Joon Kwak: Resistance Pleasure” is on view through December 15.
