While we knew going into this show season that the property would need work. The weather we have had in May and June has made the problems with our main show ring glaringly obvious. With that said Ownership and Management have come to the decision to cancel the rest of the shows for the year so that we can move forward before the ground freezes to rebuild our arenas, add an additional arena and revamp our facility with an eye on coming back bigger and better next year.
We want nothing but the best for our competitors and hope to offer you just that next year.

Stalls Available On Show Days!!!

We do have 7 stalls available for exhibitors on show days in the barn adjacent to the show grounds. Stalls will be $40 for a daily fee or $50 to haul in and use overnight, fee will be due at check in morning of the show. You provide hay/bedding and clean out of stall when leaving. You may unload in the gravel drive by the barn but will be required to park on the show grounds in a designated area. Please note if you do not have a current Coggins and Flu/Rhino vaccination on file with us for your horse proof of those must be sent (via email or messenger) prior to utilizing a stallI. If you are interested in using one of the stalls for any upcoming show please message this page directly and Mary Edwards will get back with you on availability or any questions you may have.

We are so excited to welcome back our Judge Mr. Richard Rhinehart for our 3rd Open Show of the year on Sunday 6/26/22!! If you have not had the pleasure of showing under Mr. Rhinehart before here is a little bit about him:

Hello everyone!

First let me start by saying thank you so much for having me as one of your judges.

I’ve spent most of my life around horses and pride myself on being very well rounded. I’ve dabbled in a little bit of everything from hunters to western.

My favorite thing about judging is being able to help / give advice to each and every person who shows under me.

I’m super excited to be able to spend the day with all of you! Having the best time enjoying our lovely horses.

Unfortunately we have decided that in order to keep everyone safe we will have to cancel this Sunday June, 19th VHSA/BHSA Hunter show. While prepping for the show we found multiple ground wasp nests both by the entrance to our main arena and in trailer parking. We are taking care of them and checking carefully for any others. Yesterday while working on grounds one of the men was stung more than 10 times. The reschedule date will be Saturday October 1st. Sorry for the inconvenience to all our competitors but your and your horses safety is our top priority.

Judges Spotlight
Joining us on June 19th to judge our next Hunter Show is Dale Crittenberger!

For more than 40 years, I have been lucky enough to call myself a professional horseman. During this time, I have experienced nearly every aspect of the horse show world. I have been a trainer, owner, groom, working student, breeder and judged local and IEA shows (for over 30 years). In April 2021, I added USEF “r” judge to my equestrian resume. I feel passionate about giving back to the horse show community that has been such a large part of my life and given me so many happy memories.
As a working student for Winter Place Farm in the 1970s, I groomed and exercised horses. I was also afforded the opportunity to take lessons from some of the greats in our sport: Robert Ridland, Kathy Kusner and Bernie Traurig. While with Winter Place Farm, I had the privilege of grooming notable horses Royal Blue, Gozzi, Rivet and many others.
When I graduated from The George Washington University in 1980 with a degree in theatre, I purchased a thoroughbred and began showing in the amateur owners. However shortly thereafter, I realized I could use the skills I had learned in school and traveling the world with the Maida Rivers Dance Construction Company to become a nationally renowned horse trainer.
In 1982, my vision for a horse training business became a reality when I started Woodhall Farm in Aldie, Virginia with my business partner Peter Foley. Since the business started, I have trained many horses and riders who have won championships at Devon and Indoors. I have also had a number of students and horses under my tutelage garner USEF Horse of the Year National Championships. In fact some of my students (Miranda Scott, Lara McPherson and Caroline Adams) have gone on to be successful trainers in their own right.

In addition to producing winning combinations over the last several decades, I have been fortunate to sit in the judge’s both and watch as others further their equestrian dreams. In 2020, I began the process of obtaining my “r”. I sat with Fran Dotoli at HITS Chicago at Lamplight and Mike Rosser at and Tony Sgarlata at the Gulfport Winter Classic Series. Being part of the mentorship program further enhanced my judging repertoire as I was able to learn from my mentors and learner judge a variety of classes including an International Hunter Derby, hunter divisions and big equitation classes.
There is nothing I love more than seeing the best in our sport. After being blessed to be a professional horseman for the past 40 years, I feel now is my time to give back to the sport that has given me so much.

Thank you to everyone that came out today and showed despite the heat! We appreciate you all! I was running the pony ring all day so was unable to get any pictures but I would love to see all of YOUR pictures!
I also want to thank all the parents personally that helped me move poles, jumps and anything else that needed doing!

While we are getting ready for this weekends Hunter Show I wanted to introduce everyone to our May 29th Open Show Judge!!!

Cortney Schafer has been involved with horses all of her life. Mainly owning and showing Arabians and Half Arabians, Cortney has competed at the regional and National level since the age of 11. She has had experience with many other breeds of horses as well including Morgans, Saddlebreds and Hackney Ponies. She started showing at the age of 2 and has experience in Saddle Seat, Hunt Seat, Western, Driving, and Halter. She has worked beside many top trainers in the Arabian industry including Joel Kiesner, Gene Lacroix, Shan Wilson, Virginia Godwin, Rob Bick, and Caralyn Schroter.

Cortney relocated to the Shepherdstown, WV in 2016 and started building a clientele that focuses on solid fundamental training, communication between the horse and rider, and the well being and happiness of the horse.

In 2015 Cortney worked for Smoky Mountain Park Arabians in Lenoir City, TN. She accomplished many awards such as 2 National Top Tens, A Unanimous Regional Championship, East Coast Championship, Buckeye Championship, along with many other wins. Her riders also accomplished top regional rides and many other ribbons.

In 2013 and 2014 Cortney started her own business training Arabians and Morgans. She put together a nice show string of horses and had regional wins along with one of her riders earning a Reserve World Grand Championship.

In 2012 at her first Morgan Grand National/World Championship show Cortney brought home the title of 3 Year Old English Pleasure World Champion!

Prior to that Cortney worked for Joel Kiesner for 5 years starting as a groom and working her way up to Assistant Trainer.

She firmly believes in a good foundation based on softness, being supple, and going forward. She believes the rider of a horse should be taught how to bring the best out of their horse and not just be a "passenger."

Preparations are underway for next Sundays Hunter Show with Judge Kevin Freeman! Show is VHSA and BHSA Recognized (though you don't need to be a member to Show!
Pre- entries are being accepted until this Thursday at 8 p.m. and have already started to come in.
Cash, credit card and check (made out to Shirley Shah Farm) are accepted for show enteries.
Coggins and proof of F/R vaccine required to show.
Concessions are being provided by the Berkeley County Youth Fairgrounds Horse Facilities who are raising money for upgrades at the show grounds there. They accept cash only so make sure you bring some with you to buy lunch!

🚨🚨🚨🚨 JUDGE SPOTLIGHT 🚨 🚨🚨🚨

We are extremely excited to welcome back Mr. Kevin Freeman to judge for our second of seven shows in the 2022 Hunter Series on May 22nd, you do not want to miss the opportunity to show under this amazing judge!

For those of you have not shown under Mr. Kevin Freeman, here is a little background information for you from Mr Freeman himself:

My childhood dream was to have a paint pony and be a cowboy! Although that Dream never happened, I feel very fortunate that I had horses as a part of my life. Horses have brought me much joy and happiness over the years.

I have been judging horse shows for 20 years now. One thing I enjoy the most about judging is having the chance to give encouragement and feedback to young riders, I am always interested in how they will respond as you never know what they will say.

One of my favorite quotes that has inspired me the most is from my dear friend Pam Baker, “Does the horse understand what you are asking it to do?” Meaning as a rider you have to be a good communicator.

My favorite horse book is : Common Sense Horesemandhip” by Capitan Vladimir Littauer.

Life Member VHSA, USEF, and Safe Sport trained.
