Garth Hudson, the last surviving original member of The Band, passed away peacefully this morning at age 87 in Woodstock, New York.

A Canadian multi-instrumentalist, Hudson was renowned for his mastery of the Lowery organ. He also excelled at accordion, electronic keyboards, and saxophone.

When The Band performed at Woodstock on Sunday night of the festival, rumors swirled of a surprise appearance by Bob Dylan. Despite crowd shouts of “Where’s Dylan?” The Band delivered a memorable set, ending with “The Weight,” which earned them an encore.

Though they were dissatisfied with their performance and excluded it from the Woodstock documentary and soundtrack, their popularity surged afterward. Within months, they graced the cover of Time magazine and went on to record six more studio albums. Later, Hudson became a session player and performed publicly as recently as 2023.

His music and spirit touched so many, including here at Bethel Woods, where he graced our stage with Paul Stookey in 2009 for a memorable performance on the Pavilion stage. Peter’s legacy as a musician and advocate for peace will continue to inspire.

Bethel Woods 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 (@buildingfestival) hosted its third edition called BuildFest on the site of the 1969 Woodstock festival. 🔨🔧 The festival invited students and academics to build large-scale installations that could be adapted for use during a modern music festival. You might have spotted select installations were used during Harvest Festival! The festival was supported by Think Wood (@thinkwoodcommunity), a program funded by the Softwood Lumber Board.
