Have you ever thought about what happens to your blooms, once their fleeting beauty graces your table? These gorgeous blooms were from a recent Mother’s Day event. Composting and reducing waste is so critical in creating a sustainable design. We used chicken wire and flower pin frogs at the base of these centerpieces-no foam at all. Upon pick-up, our blooms went directly to the compost bin, where they’ll get a second life once they break down and their soil becomes part of the next crop of blooms. I encourage you to ask your florist-how can I make my design better for the environment and the health of my guests? And do you compost the blooms and plant waste?

Do you know about Lehigh University Art Galleries ? Lehigh University has the most incredible art collection! I had never been to their gallery space in Zoellner-and I was so impressed. A few weeks ago we taught a class inspired by their still life paintings. The night started out with a lively and engaging conversation about the still life collection thoughtfully led by Collet, a student at Lehigh. From there attendees selected their blooms and got to designing after a brief presentation on mechanics and some tricks of the trade. Honestly-I felt so inspired. It had been a long time since I had a chance to talk about and engage with art in this way. And I always love when a group creates-each piece feels so different-so personal. Thank you for inviting us, LUAG! It’s a night I will treasure.
