Run, do not walk, to the Bohemian Trio’s return engagement on the CMLV stage. Our audience left the group’s 2023 concert with a salsa in its step, exclaiming “awesome” and “fabulous,” thoroughly charmed and highly entertained. “Latin jazz” only begins to describe their scope in terms...

Founded in 1961, Young Concert Artists has helped launch the careers of several generations of the world’s elite classical musicians and ensembles. Unlike other prestigious competitions, the New York non-profit’s Susan Wadsworth International Auditions are not content with awarding mere cash prizes or bankable notoriety. Through the YCA Artist Fellowship Program, YCA nurtures highly talented young musicians and composers for three years, providing mentors, managers, publicity, and engagements at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and other prime international venues, while instilling an ethos of cultural outreach and artistic innovation.

YCA On Tour, the organization’s chamber music touring ensemble, features both current fellows and experienced alums. This season CMLV welcomes a flourishing flutist, Anthony Trionfo, committed to helping other flutists of African descent towards their own success as classical musicians; a violinist, Risa Hokamura, who has been winning top international prizes since the age of 10; a renowned violist, Hsin-Yun Huang, who premiered an environmentally-themed musical with shadow puppets and whale songs; an accomplished cellist, Alex Cox, who moonlights as a software engineer (or vice versa); and a pianist, Ying Li, who celebrated Mozart’s 266th birthday by live-streaming a free, all-Amadeus concert on WQXR.

Formed in 1997, the Apollos are proven veterans of the concert stage (including Foy in 2019), guaranteed to reward audiences with performances consistently praised as “exceptionally fine,” “masterful,” and “heartfelt.” Their guest here this season, violist Misha Amory, is equally expert, with a résumé reaching back to the Naumburg Viola Award in 1991. Yet these four masters of classical music pop up in some innovative places and surprising collaborations: a barge under the Brooklyn Bridge, premiering works with dancer/rapper Lil Buck, recording a CD of “Piano Puzzlers” with six other pianists. Among the four, they have performed on every continent except Antarctica, although the scientists at the South Pole may be listening to their recent recording of The Complete Dvořák Piano Trios on Spotify. The Apollo Piano Trio has premiered two pieces written for them by Bruce Adolph—one based on Native American poetry and another on artwork of six twentieth-century American painters—and two by David Schiff—“New York Nocturnes” and “Borscht Belt Follies,” the latter mixing jazz, klezmer, and classical styles. With veterans like these, one can reliably expect the unexpected.

Apollo Piano Trio with Misha Amory, is playing at Faith United Church of Christ in Center Valley, PA on April 21, 2024 at 3 pm.

The beautiful instruments played by the Calidore String Quartet were made in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and the group’s programming and recordings range from Bach to Bartok . . . but frequently beyond. The four musicians are confirmed millennials, playing with fresh intimacy for 21st-century audiences and mentoring students who will continue the evolution of chamber music. The ensemble was barely launched from its 2010 founding at Colburn School in Los Angeles (the quartet’s name is a salute to California, the “golden state” of its origin) before the accolades started to roll in, including the whopping hundred thou grand prize of the 2016 M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition. An expanding inventory of grants, fellowships, prizes, and awards, as well as significant critical acclaim, has powered them to prestigious concert venues and festivals around the world. The quartet is currently on the faculty of the University of Delaware School of Music and in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The ensemble’s recordings of Beethoven’s complete string quartets, a musical Everest, are being released by Signum Records.
