The Death of Alexander the Great
Alexander’s illness began at the all-night banquet that his friend Medius threw him. It was already the second of such feasts after they came back to Babylon. They had finished most of the sacrificial pig. Also, they had said a prayer to the gods to stem their wrath. This seemed to be most expedient, as several bad omens had appeared on their way here. They couldn’t be interpreted otherwise: once they approached the ancient city walls, ravens had been seen fighting, to the point that one dropped dead, disheveled, and right in front of Alexander’s horse’s hooves. When they entered the mighty palace which once belonged to Nebuchadnezzar II, a man was waiting for them on the throne. There was some confusion but it took them not long to conclude that this rag-doll, dressed-up in the king’s purple robe, was the palace idiot.
The Babylonians were belting out some of their atonal warrior chants. The traveling wives were sucking on grapes. Alexander was pouring wine between his strong white teeth, when he suddenly smacked down the beaker amidst the jumping pork ribs, and cried out in pain. Bending double, he pressed his thumbs in his stomach.
“What’s the matter with you?” asked his closest companion Leonnates, pushing himself up drunkenly from the bench.
“I’ve been hit in the liver with an arrow," the king shrieked.
“Pull the other one,” laughed Leonnates; the tiredness caused by the protracted campaign and the hard partying had got to his head. Still, he was sober enough to briefly scan the crowded banqueting hall to ascertain no arrows were flying. “Aren’t you a drama queen?”
However, Alexander didn’t lie back elegantly on his side, but rolled himself up in a ball, his arms clenched between his stomach and his bare knees. Demophon, on his other side, berated Leonnates. “Stop rascalling, you satyr.” He sat up and pulled on Alexander’s belt. “Come, contain yourself,” he said soothingly. “The Babylonians are staring at you.”
Alexander spoke through clenched teeth: “Just grant me this privilege of a moment. I’ll be all right.” Then he shouted: “Zeus-Ammon, father in heaven, help me.”
It was his last public appearance.
