💪🏼 Birmingham’s legendary giant stands tall as the world’s largest cast iron statue; this 56-foot god of fire and forge reflects our city’s iron and steel roots. 🔥Built for the 1904 World’s Fair, Vulcan has watched over the Magic City from atop Red Mountain since the 1930s.

Cool fact: #7🔎 In March 1999 Vulcan Park & Museum closed the park to the public because Vulcan was suffering from major deterioration.
Due to the constant exposure of natural elements, Vulcan suffered from water intrusion as well as erosion from concrete that was poured inside of him. His right arm was handing on by a single bolt posing a hazardous situation forcing the park to shut down for major repairs.🛠️
You can learn more about Vulcan's deterioration in Vulcan's new podcast episode of Nuts & Bolts available on all podcast streaming sites!

Cool Fact: #4🔎 A considerable amount of the authentic stonework dating back to the Work Progress Administration era was either removed or damaged while the park underwent renovations in 1971?
To conceal the damage, concrete was used as a replacement, along with angular bushes and walkways to create a cohesive look!

Cool Fact: #2 🔎Back in 1946, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, known as the Jaycees, had a brilliant idea to revolutionize traffic safety. Their secret weapon? Vulcan, a mighty symbol chosen to promote responsible driving.
'The Big Guy' stood proudly with a neon torch perched on top of his spear, radiating a vibrant green glow. Whenever tragedy struck and a fatal traffic accident occurred, the torch would transform into a haunting shade of red for the next 24 hours. He served as a powerful visual reminder for all to drive with caution. What started as a temporary initiative ended up lasting a whopping 53 years, until 1999 when Vulcan needed some well-deserved repairs.

He's a whopping 101,200 lbs. (50 tons) and 56 ft. tall, with his foot alone weighing a staggering 2 tons standing at 6 ft. tall! To put this incredible weight into perspective, imagine fifty elephants standing side by side! 🐘
