👻 OooOOooo… from the depths of our HAUNTED COLLECTION 👀 Take a look at an original artifact of Alabama folklore from our collection—13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey—signed by the author Kathryn Tucker Windham and the ghostly Jeffrey himself on November 1st, 1969!

This haunting book takes readers through chilling tales from towns across Alabama, including Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Selma, and Mobile.

Did you know? Not only did “Jeffrey” the ghost haunt the author’s Selma home, but his eerie presence inspired teenagers to capture his spirit on film one night! And if you’re a fan of the stage, this spooky classic even found its way to live theater!

🎃 On this Halloween, dive into Alabama’s supernatural side, where every story has a hint of truth…and a dash of ghostly mystery! Pick up more spooky books by this author at our gift shop, The Anvil! You’ll get 31% off your purchase all day for Halloween!

🚨NEW ADDITION TO THE COLLECTION! The City of Birmingham recently donated the switch used to change the colors for the torch Vulcan held from 1946 to 1999. The Birmingham Junior Chamber of Commerce, also known as the Jaycees, conceived an area traffic safety campaign called “Light of Life.”

The torch would be green when the streets of Birmingham were safe and red for twenty-four hours after a traffic fatality. Initially, this was supposed to be a temporary installation but became a permanent addition to the city under the 1999 Restoration project. This item was housed by the City of Birmingham Government near City Hall, so a Public Worker would have easy access to change the color.

🚨 Stay tuned for its future display in our exhibits!

Tonight, Vulcan stands illuminated in red, white, and blue as a tribute to the lives lost, the heroes who emerged, and the resilience of our nation. On this solemn day, we remember and honor the bravery, unity, and hope that carried us through the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

🚨 Exciting News! 🚨 Our new exhibit program, From The Cast, will uncover the hidden gems of our local history! 🎉🕰️ 🌟 This year, we’re showcasing a selection of artifacts from the Vulcan Park Foundation’s collection in the Vulcan Center Museum. We’re also highlighting these treasures online! 🔍 This week, we’re shining a light on our mining heritage. This classic carbide lantern and hat were essential tools for miners from the early 1900s to the 1950s. 💡⛏️ Unlike older kerosene lanterns, carbide lanterns used acetylene gas for a brighter, safer light source. By the 1940s and 1950s, these were gradually replaced and phased out by battery-operated lights, making for safer mines since open flames were eliminated. Stay tuned for more fascinating artifacts and stories from our past! 🏺✨

Vulcan Park and Museum voted one of the 10 best attractions in Alabama by USA Today

Vulcan Park and Museum was named one of the top tourism attractions in Alabama in a recent USA TODAY and 10Best Readers’ online poll. The 10Best Readers’ Choice Award contest launches new categories every other Monday at noon, revealing the category’s 20 nominees. After four weeks of voting, the contest closes and on the Friday after the voting ends, the winners are revealed. Nominees for the categories are chosen by a panel of relevant experts which include a combination of editors from USA Today; editors from 10Best.com; relevant expert contributors; and sources for both the media and other Gannett properties. The nomination panel for each award category is displayed on its associated contest page. All voting is digital and the 10Best Readers’ Choice Award contest is accessible on the 10Best.com website.

While the 10Best Readers’ Choice Award contest lives on 10Best.com - a stand alone travel media site - it is promoted across USA TODAY Travel Media Group’s digital and mobile products, as well as via social media. Nominees are also announced and/or promoted across relevant USA TODAY departments, and through Gannett media outlets, 10Best.com provides users with original, unbiased, and experiential travel content of top attractions, things to see and do, and restaurants for top destinations in the U.S. and around the world. The core of the site's uniqueness is its team of local travel experts: a well-traveled and well-educated group who are not only experts in their fields - and their cities - but discriminating in their tastes.

These local experts live in the city they write about so the content is constantly updated. 10Best.com averages 5 million visitors per month. It was acquired by USA TODAY in January of 2013.
