We're excited to host Lathe of Heaven 3/20 at Saturn! Tickets are on sale now 🪐

Formed in 2021, Brooklyn-based Lathe of Heaven delivers a powerful new take on Post-Punk and New Wave, pushing the boundaries of both genres into an untouched realm of sonic abstraction. With melodic riffs, urgent rhythms, and Science Fiction themed lyrics, Lathe of Heaven carefully position themselves in the no-man’s-land that exists between beauty and dissonance, offering a unique sound as reminiscent of Finnish Post-Punkers Musta Paraati as it is of Swedish pop pioneers A Flock of Seagulls. Though Lathe of Heaven’s career has just recently kicked off with their 2023 debut release “Bound by Naked Skies” on Sacred Bones Records, the band has since embarked on multiple tours across North America and Europe, accompanying notable acts such as The Chameleons, She Past Away, Portrayal of Guilt, Boy Harsher, Lamp of Murmuur, Home Front, Uniform, Pink Turns Blue, and many more.

Willow Avalon plays Saturn 4/3! Don't miss your chance to see her in Birmingham.

Tickets are available publicly Fri 1/24 at 10am on saturnbirmingham.com! VIP Packages available.

Willow Avalon, a rural Georgia native whose first word was "Elvis," grew up surrounded by gospel and country music. She began playing piano in church and taught herself guitar at age 12, quickly turning to songwriting as a means of escape and salvation. At just 15, she left home and spent a brief period living in her car before making her way to California. Now based in New York, Avalon writes, plays and produces her own music alongside a small group of trusted collaborators, crafting a sound that refreshingly blends classic country and Americana. Her debut EP, Stranger, has racked up over 30 million streams, and her songs "Tequila and Whiskey" and "Homewrecker" have earned widespread attention. Avalon’s unique style has led her to share stages with artists like Charles Wesley Godwin, Paul Cauthen, Cage the Elephant and more. Her anticipated debut album, Southern Belle Raising' Hell, is due out January 2025.

We're excited to have Neggy Gemmy join as support for George Clanton's show at Saturn 4/26! Have you gotten your tickets yet?

Neggy Gemmy’s (FKA Negative Gemini) heartfelt electronic pop is built around duality. In astrology, Geminis represent polarity and though Lindsey French—the producer, singer, and songwriter behind the name—is an upbeat Sagittarius, her music has always been linked to that idea. The Los Angeles-based artist delivers sparkling vocal hooks alongside angst-ridden missives, and floating atmospherics with chest-caving bass. She’s constantly swerving and shapeshifting as her interests and surroundings change: no two releases are quite alike, yet within all of their DNA lies a magnetic songwriting sensibility that makes you want to sing, chant, and scream along with her.

Growing up in the late 80s/early 90s, David Lynch felt like a secret handshake for those of us who didn’t quite fit into the mold. Watching Twin Peaks on ABC on an old-school CRT console TV every Thursday night wasn’t just entertainment—it was a revelation. It was proof that the strange, the unsettling, and the beautiful could all be seen together as one and the same.

Escaping the small screen and occasionally witnessing Lynch’s films in a large theater with maybe only seven other people in attendance was always thrilling. The Elephant Man, Dune, Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet, etc., all were like staring into strange new, but also disturbingly all-too-familiar, worlds. By the way, I often watched all those film for free at the old Galleria 10 theater because my friend Daniel, a long-time Bottletree and still current Saturn audio engineer, was somehow a manager there when he was still in high school. He was even a bigger fan than I was, and, of course, it’s always good to know the guy with the hookup.

When I was on tour a lot throughout the 90s and 00s, I would always try to find a small independent theater to catch something between soundcheck and when it was time to play. One of my favorite memories was one day (I think it was 1997) when I was stumbling around Utrecht in the Netherlands, with all the shops and everything closed because it was a Sunday. I was just turning a corner when I suddenly felt like I had struck the wandering-around-aimlessly lottery because I saw this tiny old theater debuting their first night of Lost Highway. Over the next 135 minutes I completely lost touch with the burnout of having been traveling the last six weeks straight and I fell into the terrifying, dreamlike spell that film so perfectly conjures. I think that was the first time I became aware of how alluring and frightening liminal space can be.

Anyway, for a kid who always felt a little offbeat and a little too weird to often fit in, Lynch’s work wasn’t just art to me—it was a lifeline. It gave permission to embrace my own oddness, to lean into the unsettling beauty of things, to explore the shadows and be okay with who I was. His art was always haunting and surreal, but it was also strangely comforting. The world is a lesser place without him.

Join us Sunday, March 9th for a screening of the new documentary Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight, with a filmmaker Q&A session after the film! The night will open with a set from Orlando's The Pauses, followed by the screening and Q&A, and closing with a set from Athen's Five Eight themselves!

Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight is the story of Mike Mantione’s mental breakdown in his twenties and how picking up a guitar after leaving a psychiatric hospital saved his life. Decades later, he’s still making great music and his band Five Eight is doing vital work. Like the hyper child of Anvil: The Story of Anvil and The Devil and Daniel Johnston, this movie is a love letter to the act of creativity and the power of working with people that you love, even if they drive you crazy sometimes.

The illustrious Robyn Hitchcock plays Saturn March 14th!

With a career now spanning six decades, Robyn Hitchcock remains a truly one-of-a-kind artist: surrealist rock ’n’ roller, acoustic troubadour, poet, painter, and writer . From The Soft Boys’ art-rock and The Egyptians’ Dadaist pop to solo masterpieces like 1984’s milestone I Often Dream of Trains and 1990’s Eye, Hitchcock has crafted a striking oeuvre rife with recurring marine life, obsolete electric transport, ghosts, cheese and what one writer has described as “morbid eroticism.”
