We would Like to Announce that Registration is OPEN for the USAW Alabama Freestyle and Greco State Championships (May 4th) also for 12U and under (K-6th) there will be NO pre-qualification requirements for you to enter the state tournament.
ALL Alabama YOUTH Wrestlers with a USAW memberships ARE allowed to attend and wrestle at this event.

*AYWO State Tournament Announcement*

It is hard to believe that the 2023-2024 AYWO season is closing. We have an action-packed weekend scheduled for February 2-4, 2024. I wanted to highlight some important details to ensure everyone is on the same page. Please read all the points on this note. There is essential information you are responsible for:

1. Registration for the State Tournament ends at 11:30 pm CST on Wednesday. NO EXCEPTIONS

2. Unless you are a middle school student participating in the School Boy division or you have a VALID doctor’s excuse for non-participation in your Region tournament, you will be DISQUALIFIED from participating in the State tournament if you did not compete in your Region tournament.

3. Weigh-ins will be held Friday the 2nd at two locations from 6-8 pm
Tot-Bantam-Girls weigh in at Warrior WC (2473 Hwy 31, Calera, AL 35040)
Midget-Novice-Schoolboy weigh in at Birmingham WC (100 Old Towne Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216)
If you have multiple wrestlers that are scheduled to weigh in at multiple sites, they may all weigh in together at the same site.

4. There will be day of weigh-ins an hour before your scheduled time to wrestle, for all other age divisions EXCEPT TOT.

5. All wrestlers get a 1 lb. allowance with the singlet at weigh-ins.

6. Wrestlers must compete at the weight in which they participated in the Region tournament.

7. If a wrestler busts weight, they cannot compete in the State tournament series.

8. For wrestlers wearing braces, a mouthpiece that covers the entirety of the teeth and braces must be used and checked at both weigh-ins and on the mat (i.e., if a wrestler only has top braces, the mouthpiece only has to cover the entirety of the teeth and braces up top. Top and bottom braces require a mouthpiece that covers both sets. Failure to have an appropriate mouthpiece will result in forfeiture of the match.

9. ONLY credentialed coaches, wrestlers, and tournament workers are allowed floor access. Parents, coaches, and wrestlers who are neither “on deck” nor “in the hole” are strictly prohibited from being on the floor or mat side. You must stay in the bleachers.

10. Any wrestler charged with flagrant misconduct (i.e., biting, cursing, etc.) will immediately be disqualified from the tournament. If this is the second infraction, a suspension for the first competition of the 2024-2025 season will be levied, as well as immediate disqualification.

11. Girls State Tournament Registration DEADLINE: Wednesday, January 31st, at 2:00 pm CST. Weigh-ins:
Friday Night Weigh-ins 6 pm - 8 pm: Warrior Wrestling Club, 2469 Hwy 31 Calera, AL 35040
Saturday On-Site Weigh-ins: 5 pm to 7 pm at Thompson High School
Sunday On-Site Weigh-ins: 7 am to 8 am at Thompson High School

12. Region coaches will be making phone calls for participation in the State Duals tournament on Sunday. All phone calls for participation will be made by Tuesday evening. Registration for State Duals closes on Friday, February 2, at 2:00 PM CST. Only register if you are on a duals team for this event as there are no refunds.

As we had an unprecedented tournament cancellation in Athens last week, the AYWO board recognizes that some wrestlers were unable to secure their participation in one (1) individual tournament.

In order to promote continued growth within the sport, we have decided to suspend the one (1) tournament rule for every wrestler that was registered to participate in the Athens tournament. This suspension is only in place for wrestlers who were registered for the Athens tournament.

However, any wrestler that did not participate in a tournament during the regular season, will not be seeded at the State tournament, no matter how they finish at their regional tournament.

Please familiarize yourself with the rules. Only wrestlers hailing from the state of Alabama will be able to participate in the AYWO State Tournament. Additionally, please be mindful of the following:

1. Boys Tot through Schoolboy (Middle School) will wrestle on Saturday, February 3 at Thompson High School.
Weigh ins will be held Friday the 2nd at two locations. 6-8pm
Tot-Bantam-Girls weigh in at Warrior WC
**ALL TOTS MUST WEIGH IN FRIDAY NIGHT**

Midget-Novice-Schoolboy weigh In at Birmingham WC.
There will be day of weigh ins an hour before your scheduled time to wrestle, for all other age divisions (EXCEPT TOT).

2. Girls Tot-Schoolgirl will wrestle on Sunday, February 4 at Thompson High School.

3. There will be a Regional Duals Tournament held on Sunday February February 4 at Thompson High School. Selection for the Regional Duals team will be by each regional Director. Invitations for both an “A” and “B” team will be extended to individual wrestlers. Do not register for a dual team until you have been extended an invitation to participate by your Region Director.

We are so excited as the 2023–2024 AYWO wrestling season comes to a close. We have seen unprecedented growth in the youth arena this year. We routinely have more than 900 wrestlers participate each weekend. That growth is because of you and we are so grateful for your commitment to growing wrestling in Alabama.

We will see you in Birmingham in a couple of weeks.

If your child is registered for the AYWO Battle for Athens Gladiator Tournament on Jan 20, due to the unforeseen weather you will be receiving a full refund for this event.
This event does not have a rescheduled date as of right now! More than likely it will be held after our youth season is over.

The AYWO Grapple at Gardendale is still capped out and will NOT reopen.

Due to impending Freezing weather in North Alabama, the Athens Gladiator Tournament has been postponed until a later date can be solidified. The Safety of our youth wrestlers and their families is our number 1 concern.

The Gardendale Tournament is still going to be held on Saturday Jan 20.
We will update everyone if situations with the weather change.

What a great turn out for The AYWO Battle for the Sword Gladiator Tournament in Madison this past weekend. Over 600 kids wrestled on New Years weekend!!
AYWO wants to also give a shout out to all those who competed at the Tyrant Scuffle in Tennessee! Yall represented for AYWO, with class, honor, and Humbleness.
