You know whatâs worse than failing at a new idea? Never trying one in the first place.
Someone came to me recently, embarrassed that they had tried out new things and they didnât turn out the way they imagined.
I laughed and started listing off my many ventures that flopped:
đââïž Exercise program developer (even though Iâm not a certified personal trainer).
đš Sugar cookie decorator (even though Iâm not exactly an artist).
đ©âđ« Homeschooling mom (this one at least made more sense given my decade in education)...and the list goes on.
Iâm not embarrassed by any of it any more.I think people should try new things. If a hobby makes a little extra money, thatâs great. If it makes you happy, thatâs even better.
I would much rather spend time with someone who is full of ideas than with someone who thrives on gossip. Gossip is draining. Talking about other people is soul-sucking.
Short story long: Iâd rather hear your 500 business ideas and your dreams for fixing the world than hear what Betsy did at the County Fair. Sorry if your name is Betsy.
And P.S. because someone needs to hear this nobody really cares what youâre doing as much as you think they do. Your immediate family and a few close friends might notice, but most people are too busy living their own lives. As proof, very few people will read this to the end.
In time, the person who dares to try a million things will find the one that feels like home and it will stick. Theyâll thrive, the shame will fade, and theyâll finally see that their life was never meant to look like anyone elseâs.
Now, Iâll be in my garden if you need me, where the flowers bloom, the pollinators hustle, and not a single soul is wasting time judging you.
