Pay it forward when you can. Happy Career Day! I hope some kids I saw today end up growing their own cut flowers and selling them. What a wonderful way to make an income and change the flower world for good. 🙂

P.S. It’s sock cap weather, finally!

You can only grow one flower the rest of your life, what are you growing?

Gomphrena (globe amaranth) is my answer! Romantic, swoon-worthy, love the sound it makes, love how it dries, and it is cut and come again!

Two dying wishes from my Dad:

1. Stay close to your sister
2. Make sure your mom has flowers on our anniversary (spoiler alert, Mom)

Happy anniversary to my Mom and Dad and a special thank you to the kindness of BlueBird Flower Fields for providing the absolutely stunning flowers to arrange with!

What did he want the card to say? My mom will understand when she reads it.

Love echos even in death.

🍂 Love the Autumn Equinox
🍎 Something ate all our apples, but we have plenty of persimmons to make persimmon cake
🍅 Tomatoes are slowing down
🫑 Peppers came in late this year but plentiful
🥬 Swiss chard and bok choy look decent
🫘 Green beans are slowing
🌶️ Jalapeños still coming in hot
💐 Flowers are mostly spent but we started our cold-weather flowers under grow lights and planted some into the ground of the flower garden rows for next spring
🐛Lots of ladybugs, swallowtail caterpillars, and milkweed bugs
🍺 Started brewing more kombucha again thanks to Mrs. Koenig sharing her SCOBY hotel with us

We believe it to be nonnative praying mantis (Chinese mantis). However, how cool is it to watch it take out a hornworm that was on our tomato plants. You could easily see the importance of having beneficial (native) insects in your garden to help balance the score. Insecticides kill the good guys, too.

👻 Even ghosts enjoy flowers! That’s pretty much a wrap on 2024. We survived! These are going to a dear friend in the hospital.

If you’re pulling out your tomato cages, you can make one of these ghosts with the following directions:

Nothing going on here but organized chaos and the common theme of being behind. 🤪

I’m trying my hand at overwintering cool-weather flowers and would you believe I’m already 2 weeks behind schedule?!

Still, I think there’s hope as an unseasonably warm October is on the menu and the frost date might come a bit later.

🐓 Please also enjoy the little message I refound in our homemade chicken coop today from my Dad!

🐸 Read it, please.

Here’s your reminder to please stop using pesticides, herbicides, and harsh fertilizers.

Here’s why:

When you use these it kills toads and frogs because their skin easily and readily absorbs toxins OR the insects and worms they eat hold toxins then they are directly poisoned!

If you break down any part of a food web, you leave it unbalanced. Meaning, you will have MORE problems in your gardens over time than if you had just left well enough alone and let nature do its work.

If you poison the insects, you also poison the predators that eat them. If you poison the predators, you’ve made your problem ten times worse! Look at the energy pyramid attached in the pictures and kindly notice there is less energy at the top with fewer population as you work your way up.

That means, if you kill the predators because you’ve poisoned the insects and plants, please know that those insects and plants will still reproduce and make more of themselves at a much faster rate than the predators will. Without the predators, you will need more and more poison. You might have fixed the problem for now, but overall you’ve caused so many more issues that will come back to bite over time.

In short, let nature work it out. Release beneficial insects. Make your own organic fertilizer working with nature, and skip the poison!

Did you know we have a ton of toads, frogs, fireflies, and pill bugs on our property? I always hear people asking where they are at. They are here because we grow everything organically. We don’t use poison. If you’re wondering where they are around you, start asking why?! There’s a reason!

The proof is in the pudding! Go check out our organically grown produce hauls in pictures further down our page, and understand pesticides and herbicides are uneccesary. There will be some years things won’t grow as well, and that’s okay! Let it be. Grow a variety of plants and you will always have food. Biodiversity is key! Learn how to companion plant. Put in the work. 🩷

In a world that wants fast fixes and puts bandaids on hemorrhages, please start doing what is right, not what is easy.

I officially and successfully grew celery from seed for the first time this year! Woohooo! It only took me a decade to figure out. 🫠

Somebody had the “grocery store” looking like a hot mess, so I had to spend a couple hours cleaning it up this morning before I went shopping. 😂 The aisles were a disaster and completely run over with weeds. Rude.

I’m first week (homeschool teacher) tired, so I treated myself to a cut bouquet from our gardens.

🐥 P.S. the gorgeous baskets are my neighbor Dottye’s. lol, Dottye Daues if you see anything I can barter for the eggs you gave us, I’ll fill up the baskets and return them to you today. Margot wants to see your new baby chicks.

🌸 🍐 🫘 🌶️ 🫑 🐓 🌼

It was a great afternoon of putting up some more of the garden, canning some homemade chicken broth, pears from our tree, jalapeños, green beans and stocking the freezer, too.

Drying some of flowers for crafts seems to be a new hobby.

A special thank you to the Toombs for more jars and Ashley Armbruster for sending us videos on how to dry our flowers.

🍯 🐝 When Exit 157 Farm and Apiary gives you the most delicious honey for your birthday and everyone sneaks in the pantry to eat the honeycomb all evening. This girl eats and asks for medicine cups of honey, so what a perfect gift!

We have enjoyed watching the bees Nick keeps by our cut flower garden. Go check out all the cool things he does right in Bloomsdale if you haven’t already!

🎂 Please join in on celebrating the REAL BOSS LADY behind Valley Abloom LLC, Ms. Margot! She’s turning 4 tomorrow.

🌼 This year Little Ms. Margot settled on a wildflower-themed bday party; and boy oh boy, could we run wild with that theme!

🌸 We busted out Tallulah and had a floral bar, used real flowers on her cake, made her a bouquet of sugar cookies, and of course, made her our chocolate chip cookies & Mr. Abloom smoked some delicious pulled pork.

Nicholas Rozier stopped by and gifted Margot with some honey and honeycomb from Exit 157 Farm and Apiaryafter checking on his bees he keeps by our cut flower garden. 🐝

🫶She was delighted people took the time out of their busy lives to spend time with her today, and I hope she keeps that special feeling inside of her always.

On a side note, hyper kids can grow up to teach themselves cool stuff. It felt amazing to have the skillset to make all this for her…and to think…it’s all because I can’t sit still! 😂 So if you struggle to sit still, here’s your reminder that it’s future potential fuel!

🍁 🍂 I’m getting hints of fall over here!

🥚 Yesterday, our sweet neighbor dropped off a basket of eggs at our door. Look how beautiful they are!

🍄‍🟫 My husband foraged for the chanterelle mushrooms in our woods. Keep your eyes open for these beauties!

🍅 I tried out a friend’s canning tomato sauce recipe. It was so easy! Check it out here:

🎃 We also used up more of our pumpkin puree from last season on these muffins. They are a household favorite: https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/pumpkin-crumb-cake-muffins/
