Holidays in the Red Barn
Our fast-paced world with its drive-thru mentality causes us to lose sight of the importance of traditions in our lives. Traditions – those times in our lives where we experience the familiar as we share special occasions with food and fellowship surrounded by our family and friends – are soon to be only distant memories if we do not work towards continuing them and instilling their value in our children. The Keaton family’s Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions were made even more special this year as we moved our celebrations to the Keaton family barn and enjoyed formal, sit-down dinners amid seasonal decorations. How did our holiday traditions become even more special this year? I am happy to say that the youngest granddaughter, Ashton Olivia, dreamed of having Thanksgiving in the barn, proposed the idea and the rest is history. In addition to our modified venue, Thanksgiving 2017 proved to be extraordinary as we celebrated an engagement, hosted soon-to-be new family from California and had every family member in attendance. Watching Ashton’s face as she lovingly unwrapped Nana’s silver tray, teapots and special china for use in her tablescape was so heartwarming. Nana would have been so excited to see her treasured possessions used in such a wonderful way. Nana would have also enjoyed seeing family members pitch in to clean the barn, hang painter’s cloth curtains and lots of twinkly lights, while working together to decorate the barn perfectly. Trips to flea markets and antique stores to score vintage dishes, china and crystal was the beginning of a new mother-daughter tradition - I hope. All of the hard work and loving selection of just right pieces of china led to a perfect tablescape (my favorite new word of 2017). Ashton’s work was simply jaw-dropping as we enjoyed a view of fresh cut flowers, grapevine wreath, candles and a mix of vintage dishes. Smiles were bigger, family members lingered longer over lively table conversation, and lots of photos and selfies were taken to provide memories for years to come. Just like that, a new layer to our holiday family traditions was born thanks to a millennial who has already grasped the importance of family celebrations and traditions. The Keatons would repeat the use of the new barn venue for our traditional Christmas Eve dinner which was also great fun as the weather cooperated and we dined together in candlelight with snowflakes projecting on the barn wall. A Christmas tablescape created by Ashton and her sister, Bonnie, was worthy of lots of photos and the makeshift dining table created by Ashton’s grandfather was used one more time in 2017 in the festive red barn. 2017 was an awesome year for Keaton family traditions. I so look forward to those we create and celebrate in 2018!
