Wedding “details” aren’t just tablescapes and flatlays.

On that topic, there is a lot of sterilization of what wedding details are.
I think people (photographers) see beautiful images of immaculately designed weddings with enormous budgets in Vogue or Harpers Bazaar and assume that is the only way to approach photographing wedding details.
Maybe it’s not the same for everyone . But to me, a photograph of a dress hanging will never have the impact and emotion of that same dress being worn. An image of the most beautifully put together space will never compare with one of the couples excitement during their first time seeing that space.

My point here is that every image has a purpose. Knowing the purpose you’re trying to fulfill before you release the shutter will make it much easier to be successful and keep your couples (and other vendors) happy.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! Am I right/wrong and why?

Opinion time:
When I say that not everything in a wedding day needs to be “perfect,” I mean it.

Even something as simple as a messy table tells a story.
It shows that people were here. They existed in a very real way. They enjoyed the meal that you painstakingly chose; and the wine made sure they were comfortable dancing the night away.

While it may not be the most beautiful image and it certainly won’t win any awards (unless deems messy tablescapes a new trend) it still has a place and purpose - to cement the memories of your wedding day through imagery.

Once upon a time I would have looked at this photo and said “they’re off center, it’s not good enough to post”

And while that’s true, I now feel that this is real and a great moment from the day that should be shared with the world.

Documentary photography isn’t about getting it perfect 100% of the time. It’s about capturing the emotion and story. So that’s what I do - unapologetically document reality as beautifully as I can.

I am a member of Fearless Photographers and I'm taking the awards competition seriously for the first time.
I scoured back through the past 6 years worth of images to find photos that I think fit the bill but I am having a terribly hard time narrowing it down.

Like most things with weddings, it’s “tradition” to take portraits with your partner along with family and any other special groups like the wedding party. Here’s the thing about tradition though…it’s not a rule. You don’t have to follow the same timeline as hundreds of others before you. YOU DON’t HAVE TO DO ANY OF IT. Don’t get me wrong, I love shooting portraits and I think it’s a great way to showcase and preserve exactly what you looked like and how you feel about each other. But, what I’m saying is that you can always break the tradition. You can do a first look and have your portraits before the ceremony. You can do a day after session and have unlimited time for portraits. You could even choose to skip them all together. It’s your wedding and you should get to choose what is important to you both and how you want to spend your time. Just something to think about. • • • •
