About The Opera
Based on the timeless play by William Shakespeare, Gounod’s sumptuous operatic adaptation traces the universally known tragic story of two star-crossed lovers from feuding families.
A pair of artists at the peak of their vocal powers, soprano Nadine Sierra and tenor Benjamin Bernheim headline in the title roles, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct one of the repertoire’s most romantic scores.
Gounod infuses the opera with an elegant musical aura that reflects the soaring poetry of the original story and provides musical and dramatic texture to the tragedy, which is admired for its contrasting elements of light and dark.

Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera tells the enchanting story of a Brazilian opera diva who returns to her homeland to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus—and to search for her lost lover, who has vanished into the jungle.
The Sembrich’s preview program includes an introduction to the opera by Mexican tenor Leonardo Sanchez, recorded live on location in front of the Metropolitan Opera House. An added treat, exclusive to our Met in HD audience: an aria on video performed by Leonardo, recorded in The Sembrich studio last summer!

This project began three years ago with the professional assessment of Mme. Sembrich's opera costumes. Last Giving Tuesday you helped us launch a $72,500 campaign to preserve the Queen of the Night.
This exquisite gown was featured in the Metropolitan Opera's first production of Mozart's The Magic Flute in 1900 and in the Met's centennial exhibition in 1983, and will be the centerpiece of our 2024 exhibition Mastering Mozart.
But first we need to ensure that this costume will survive through another century. This campaign will directly fund preservation work by Gwen Spicer, a nationally respected textiles conservator. Once completed, the newly preserved costume will once again exemplify the grandeur of opera in the turn of the 20th century.
As of today, we have raised $59,537, leaving us only $12,961 from our goal!
