Two exceptional musicians with strong ties to NEC have received 2025 Avery Fisher Career Grants!

⭐️ Violinist and NEC Concert Artist Joshua Brown ’22, ’24 MM, ’26 AD, a student of Donald Weilerstein

⭐️ Cellist and NEC Prep alumnus Dr. Tommy Mesa, ’08 Walnut Hill School for the Arts graduate and recipient of the 2023 Sphinx Medal of Excellence

Both will be celebrated tonight at a special ceremony at WQXR’s Jerome L. Greene Performance Space in New York City. Each recipient receives a $25,000 grant for career advancement and a professional recording of their performance at the ceremony.

The Avery Fisher Artist Program was established in 1974 by the late Avery Fisher as a monument to his philanthropy, love of classical music, and commitment to supporting young artists. Since 1976, 179 Career Grants have been awarded — with 21 percent going to musicians with ties to NEC.

Brown will also perform on NEC’s Concert Artists Series in Jordan Hall on Tuesday, March 25, as part of the Institute for Concert Artists Showcase.

Please join us in congratulating Joshua Brown and Dr. Tommy Mesa! 🎉

Discover the inspiring story of Monir Vakili, a trailblazing NEC alumna we’re proudly showcasing this !

After attending NEC from 1960-1961 with a focus on opera directing, Monir spearheaded the establishment of Iran’s first opera company, showcasing renowned works such as La bohème and elevating opera to a prominent position in Iran’s cultural landscape.

Known as “Iran’s First Lady of Opera,” she also pioneered an opera film festival — one of the world’s earliest — and founded a coed boarding school dedicated to opera and choral singing.

We are proud to honor Monir Vakili’s memory and impact on the world of opera.
