Hiroshi stepped into the factory with an open mind. He had traveled 10,000 miles to get to Cincinnati just for this one meeting, and there was a lot riding on it; because back home in Kyoto, Japan, there were plenty of people doubting him.

When he took over the business from his grandfather in 1949, he had no management or engineering experience, and that didn’t sit well with those who had been with the company for decades. In the seven years since taking over the role, however, he succeeded in what many thought would be impossible—leading the small company to domination in the playing card market in Japan.

But Hiroshi’s vision was bigger than that. He wanted to lead their company to worldwide success, which is why he arranged a meeting with the leaders from the largest manufacturer of playing cards in the world, The United States Playing Card Company, in the hopes of gaining inspiration to bring back home.
When he stepped into their headquarters, however, something didn’t feel right. He was dismayed to discover they were operating out of a small office and factory. It was not the vision he saw in his mind, and soon realized that playing card manufacturing didn’t have the capacity for the kind of growth he had a passion for.

Rather than being discouraged, Hiroshi used this information to empower his vision with a new plan, by diversifying the company’s ventures in family home entertainment products. Instead of simply producing playing cards, they also went on to produce board games and toys, and as electronics began to enter the market, he directed his engineers to begin experimenting with the new medium. As a result of Hiroshi vision, during his 53 years as president, he successfully transformed the Nintendo Playing Card Company into an international multibillion-dollar leader in the video game industry.

Despite the initial lack of experience, Hiroshi Yamauchi achieved positive results through fascination, vision, and community—fueled by the belief in his capacity to grow, a clear sense of direction, and surrounding himself with empowered people to move the mission forward.

He only worked there one summer—that space between high school and the rest of life—and the only thing Bob really remembers about his time at the factory is a conversation he had with the woman one day at lunch.

When Bob’s mother worked there two decades earlier, this same woman had already been there for decades, so he was curious to speak with her. “What’s her story?” he wondered silently to himself.

“I’m saving for retirement,” she answered out loud when they sat together at lunch.“I’m going to see the world!” She had been delaying gratification for decades, saving every spare penny for “someday.”

Bob didn’t think much of it at the time. After all, summer was brief, and he already had his own “someday” to think about. It wasn’t until years later that he thought about that conversation again, when he learned of the woman’s death—two weeks after retirement. All those years of waiting for a “someday” that never came.

She was finally ready for takeoff, but had run out of runway.

We can wait our whole lives for someday opportunities, or we can make our opportunities for ourselves.
