Dahlia moonlighting as a Peony ✨I’ve been trying to grow this variety for awhile now and this is the first successful year I’ve had.

Most of the tubers I’ve had in the past have produced small, scrawny plants. This one I grew from a cutting from . I’m in love 💕

The variety name: Kelgai Ann and the inner petals curl inward like peony petals. So lovely, this one ✨

What’s your fave dahlia?

Best Daffodil Combinations ✨ When I’m planning out my spring garden I’m always wondering what to plant with what. Here are some of my fave daffodil combinations to take the guesswork out for you:

1-2. ‘Candy Princess’ ‘Apricot Whirl’ and ‘Cum Laude’
3-4. ‘Shrike’ and ‘Precocious’
5-6. ‘Drama Queen’ and ‘Cassata’
7-8. ‘My Story’ and ‘Salmon Impression’ tulips

Which is your fave combo?

Top 8 Most Beautiful Daffodils you should grow in your garden ✨ I used to think daffodils only came in bright yellow—I was strictly a tulip lover in the spring. However, in the last few years I’ve started planting daffodils in the garden and have discovered so many beautiful varieties that I’ve been missing out on ✨

Here are my 8 favorites (not in order):
1. Shrike
2. Delnashaugh
3. My Story
4. Replete
5. Apricot Whirl
6. Precocious
7. Drama Queen
8. Orangerie

Last fall I planted them in the pattern of a wave and am excited to see them come back again in the spring. This fall I’ll probably go through and plant a few more in any empty patches.

What about you? Do you love daffodils? Do you have them in your garden?

Sandia Brocade ✨ I’ve tried growing this beurre for a couple seasons but this has been the best yield so far—other years the plants were small and spindly but this year is yielding some beauties already.

Dahlias come in a bunch of forms—Dinnerplate (large as your face like Cafe Au Lait), Ball (looks like the shape of a ball from the side, petals reach all the way back to the stem, like Cornell Bronze), Waterlily (looks like a water lily or a peony like Kelgai Ann), and anemone (single layer of petals around a fluffy center like Sandia Brocade).

What’s your favorite? I’ve got a weakness for waterlily and anemone.

In full bloom ✨ KA’s Mocha Katie again but fully bloomed from the garden. I love how the petals unfold all the way to the stem in ombré.

Which stage do you prefer for this one? First opened or fully bloomed?

Dahlias✨KA’s Mocha Katie was my first to bloom this year. This beauty was hybridized by Kristine Albrecht of and grown from a cutting from . I cut these a little early so they’re not fully open yet (couldn’t wait!) but loving the rusty reds and blush tones. There’s a hint of gold but that fades as the flower opens on the plant. When they open a bit more you can see the ombré fade of petals down the side, the gold turning to blush with rusty red streaks. Lmk if you want to see the next stage of this one opening in the comments!

Early Glow ✨The stages of opening, from on the plant to when it expires. Flowers, like people, have beauty at every phase. What’s your favorite stage? As a florist my favorite moment has always been when it’s on the plant, sometimes in bud form, but mainly just at the opening. I love the idea of all of the potential that lies before each bloom. But these days I’m noticing there’s also a special kind of beauty at the expiration—petals losing color and fading, dropping one by one—something I’m enjoying capturing as well.

If you’re planning what to plant this fall this is a lovely variety to add. ‘Early Glow’ is an early bloomer with large creamy single blooms (a little blush when it first blooms) and a golden fringe inside.

Daffodil ‘Cassata’ ✨ As I’m planning next year’s spring bulbs I’m looking back at some of the beauty I didn’t get a chance to post in the spring. I love the lemony frilly interior—reminds me of a tropical bird or the swish of a yellow skirt 🍋

So glad that daffodils are perennial and I won’t have to do as much digging this fall. I’ll probably still amend some places to make it a bit fuller, but looking forward to seeing these pretty ladies in April!

Mystery Itoh ✨ Help! I’ve had this plant for a handful of seasons and it never bloomed for me until this year, when it eked out one single bloom. I ordered ‘Hilary” originally but it doesn’t look nearly as full as photos of it online. I’m thinking it might be another ‘Julia Rose’. If anyone has a guess help me out!

Tulipa ‘Estella Rijnveld’ (Destiny) ✨ While tulip picking a few weeks ago I spied this new-to-me parrot tulip and had to get some. I love the painterly petals of white and crimson and just might have to add them to my list for the fall.

Would you plant these in your garden? What would you put with them?

Hellebores ✨ One of my spring favorites, and probably my all-time favorite for shade-grown flowers. They also are one of the first to peek through the soil, even beating the snowdrops. Some of them even bloom late fall into winter. I grew mine from plants from my wholesale vendor so this variety was not labeled but I love the muted mauve/brown/green tones. They are so lovely paired with the brighter shades of tulips. *Florist tip*: if you wait until the pollen has dropped before cutting, they will last so much longer in the vase⚡️ Have you seen these IRL? Do you have hellebores in your garden?

Breakout Dahlia ✨ My first time growing this variety. Can’t get enough of the blushy golden tones on these 5” blooms.

My dahlias are still going strong but this week it’s going to be a freeze so it’s time to prep them for winter storage.

Fall gardening is always a bit of a scramble—moving plants around and getting bulbs in the ground. But can’t wait for what’s coming in the spring 🌿

Why you should grow dahlias from seed ✨

When I first started growing dahlias I always grew them from tubers. Tubers give you the exact variety of the parent plant, so you know exactly what you’re getting. Last year I decided to grow them from seed for the first time. Seedlings are a bit of a surprise in the garden. You never know what you’re going to get because of cross-pollination with neighboring varieties. I loved discovering beautiful variations so much in the garden each day that I think I enjoyed these little seedlings more than my dahlia varieties themselves!
Which is your fave, 1-10?

Needless to say I’ll be growing more seedlings this year. Want to try it with me?

Here are some tips:
*Start your seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost date in your area

*Put a thin layer of soil in a low flat tray. (Or I used small seedling pots) Sprinkle the dahlia seeds and cover lightly with soil

*Keep it lightly watered (not soaking wet). Seeds should sprout in 7-10 days

*Once the seedlings are 3” tall you’ll want to separate them into pots and grow for a 4-5 weeks as a seedling before planting outdoors. I usually use grow lights

* Before planting outside you’ll want to harden the seedlings off (gradually acclimating them to outdoors for an hour or two and gradually longer each day). Plant when danger of frost is gone

Here are some dahlia seed resources: * is my go-to for all things about growing dahlias. She has some great instructional videos and reels about each step

*Seeds: I got mine from and this year—both of whom are now sold out! But I saw that and still have some available. Hope you try it!
