The Great St. Valentine - Martyr for Lovers
As colorful signs of romantic love appear everywhere during the month of February, it is good to ponder the life and legacy of the man for whom Valentine’s Day is named.
Legend tells us that St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers, birds, and beekeepers, defied Emperor Claudius by secretly marrying couples in order to spare the husbands from being drafted into war. For this, he was jailed and sentenced to death. Before he died, around A.D. 270, he wrote to a letter to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness, and signed it "From your Valentine". Because of this, his feast day, Valentine’s Day, is associated with love and the ancient “lovers’ festival”.
Over the centuries, the holiday has expanded to express affection among relatives and friends as well as romantic lovers.

Gypsophila: The Sparkling Tiny Flower That Steals The Show
Gypsophila comes from the Greek words gypsos, meaning gypsum, and phileo, meaning to love. The name is derived from the fact that all the flowers in this family thrive on soil high in gypsum, a mineral that makes the soil too thick and heavy for many other types of plants. The common variety dates back several centuries. Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus first received specimens from Johann Amman in the 18th century and are native to parts of Australia, Eurasia, the pacific islands, and regions of Africa.
These delicate white flowers are not only beautiful, appearing as “bright white sparkles” among more vibrant flowers like roses, chrysanthiums and tulips, but have a rich history of symbolizing:
• Everlasting and undying love, including family, platonic, and romantic bonds
• Reconnecting with lost loves or disconnected family members

What’s Behind The Name?
