With Mother’s Day around the corner, I can’t help but cherish a message my mom instilled in me. “You never know until you try.”

At 9 years old, there was a Minneapolis Star Tribune coloring contest I couldn’t refuse. It was an intricate map of the Twin Cities with a grand prize trip to Disney Land up for the win. I was motivated. I colored my heart out and knew I was probably one of hundreds vying for the prize. Fast forward a few weeks and I’m getting off the school bus with eager parents dressed in Disney gear, wearing Micky hats singing “M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E.” I was SO embarrassed!

As we walked home, they shared the news that I had won the grand prize and because of this effort, my family of four was heading to Disney Land for free. As a 9-year old, boy was I proud!
