The Swiss German magazine SPUREN recently asked me to write a personal article on the topic of embodiment for their upcoming issue themed āFemale Powerā. (And I got paid $150 USD which made me realize how much I miss getting paid to publish!!) I had to keep it incredibly short - only 1400 characters, which was quite a task - and itās going to be translated and published in German. So I thought Iād share the original English version here!
(The image of me with the tree is from a recent Authentic Movement session in my backyard with the womenās group Iāve been practicing with for over a decade. I could write a book just about the universe of that moment. š)

Embodiment is nothing short of revolution in a world that is increasingly virtual. For me, the honesty of sensation is a religious experience that pierces the world of abstraction and humbles me into something beyond conception.
My own process of being āborn againā happened through somatic practices ā Authentic Movement, Rosen Method bodywork, yoga, etc. Frozen processes unwound in my nervous system and psyche and I found myself alive in a wholly new way. My mother birthed my physical body and these embodiment arts helped birth my *presence* into my body, now constantly emerging. I joined with my body in the sacred process of becoming more subject than object.
The fact that our bodies all formed in the womb of a woman reveals the inherent femininity of embodiment. To embody something is to make it manifest in the world ā to bring it from thought to action, from conception into raw, real birth. And to value embodiment is also to respect the whole manifest world and the sensations of our collective body, our living planet. Dedication to embodiment leads to personal transformation as well as sustaining the health of life on earth. It all goes hand in warm hand.
Our bodies thrive on the nutrition of our presence, and our souls thrive with the nutrition of our embodiment
Movement Improvisation Exploring Group Attunement!
I co-hosted a 5-day āNo/Retreatā last week with my partner (and best-selling author!) Steven Harrison, investigating collective or āfieldā awareness, and what happens when we go deeply into the truth of the moment, without retreating from what is, or each other.
People flew in from around the country and we lived together in temporary investigative community - eating meals we cooked ourselves, sitting in unstructured ādialogsā together, AND moving!
I got to facilitate both Authentic Movement and group dance improvisation techniques called āEnsemble Thinkingā that I studied 20 years ago with the fabulous Nina Martin, who developed them as a way to help a group of movers attune and resonate deeply enough to spontaneously create together.
It was so fun to play with people who donāt consider themselves dancers at all but intrepid explorers into the expansion of consciousness. Itās so delightful to try to find ways to distribute authority so that organic ways of self-organizing can change our very culture, at large. š
