Often when I mention to folks that I am a wedding photographer, they say something like:
"Oh man, I wish we would have hired someone else."
Whether they hired a friend, went for a budget option, or simply didn't research very much, a lot of couples wish they would have invested in a photographer who aligned with their wedding vision.
So how do you avoid this?
1️⃣ Know what style of imagery you are drawn to. Do you like more candid photos? Look for a documentary photographer. Want your photos to look like they’re out of a magazine? Hire an editorial photographer. Understanding different styles of photography will help you sort through all the options.
2️⃣ Talk with other vendors who you have already booked. They work with many different photographers and can point you in the right direction.
3️⃣ Ask to see 3 full-day wedding galleries. This will give you a good idea of how a photographer documents an entire wedding day. Remember, Instagram and websites often showcase the highlight reels of our best work.
BONUS TIP: Pay attention to how the photographer makes you feel. Even if a photographer does amazing work, don’t pick someone you don’t feel comfortable with. They will be with you for the majority of your wedding day.

Figuring out a wedding budget can be tough!
My biggest tip for budgeting would be to set values for your wedding day and spend money on things that will enhance that experience.
Do you want a big party? Spend money on a dj.
Do you want to thank the people that mean the most to you in your life? Spend a little extra on the food.
Do you really want a wedding with a luxurious feel? Spend the money on a nice venue.
The one outlier to this rule is the photographer. Spend as much as you can afford. (Trust me I’m not saying this because I’m a photographer) Photos are the only thing, besides your spouse, that you will have to remember your wedding day. I have seen way too many people skimp in this category and deeply regret it years later.
