Living in Portugal however, sparked her innate creative talent for luxury cake design. Julie evolved her career transitioning from editorial design work to become certified as an expert in elaborate cak

e artistry. She studied with various renowned cake designers and traveled between Portugal and the U.S. to train at various schools including the famous Wilton School of Cake Decorating and Confectionary Art in Illinois. By 2010, she had built increasing renown and reputation in Portugal for creating beautiful and delicious creations with establishment of novel (“pop-up”) cake shops, popular decorating workshops and the launch of her luxury cake business. Portugal presented many opportunities for Julie. Her talent for high-end cake artistry attracted a loyal following and she is continually featured in many top European magazines, on wedding and lifestyle blogs, and is a baking and cake design expert on Portuguese television. With impressive mastery of the Portuguese language, Julie has also become a successful book author in Portugal. She’s created three popular cookbooks, "Os Bolos da Julie" (Julie's Cakes), "As Festas da Julie" (Julie's Parties) and "A Bíblia dos Bolos de Casamento" (The Wedding Cake Bible). Katherine's bridal shower at the Sarasota Yacht Club was a celebration straight out of a dream! ✨ On this very day in 2021, her closest friends and family gathered for an exclusive tea party filled with laughter, champagne, and a cake as breathtaking as the day itself.

The cake I created for her was hand-painted in the palest shade of blue, adorned with gold-painted fondant architectural details and cherubs. Inside, layers of raspberry champagne cake and vanilla cake with fresh raspberries, raspberry jam, and white chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream created elegant pink-and-white stripes in every slice.

As I carefully placed the final touches on Jaime and Sean’s Ca' d'Zan Mansion-inspired wedding cake, I was overcome by a wave of emotion—pride, gratitude, and an indescribable joy. This creation was more than just a cake; it was a story, a reflection of their love and the beauty of their day.

The timing was serendipitous. As the final tier was set, the soft golden hues of the sunset bathed the room, accentuating the intricate details of the design. Around me, the ambiance was nothing short of magical—delicate drapery intertwined with a cascade of twinkling lights, gold and ivory tablescapes adorned with lush greenery and exquisite florals, all exuding an air of timeless elegance.

Creating a cake of this magnitude always stirs a mix of excitement and nervous energy. Each sugar flower, every painted detail, every element demands perfection. I always laugh when I hear someone say, 'I’m not a big fan of wedding cakes,' or 'I never eat cake at weddings because it’s never good.' To me, that’s unthinkable, because I firmly believe a wedding cake shouldn’t just be beautiful—it should be delicious. So delicious that guests can’t help but ask for a second slice.

My philosophy is simple: aesthetics and taste are equally important. My cakes aren’t just decorations; they’re made to be remembered. Every creation is the result of artisanal work, crafted with family recipes—my mother’s, my grandmother’s, and my own. Each ingredient is chosen with care: organic eggs, fresh butter, and high-quality Callebaut chocolate (and yes, I’ll admit, I sometimes sneak a taste straight from the bag).

For me, creating a cake is like telling a story, evoking childhood memories through flavors that pair perfectly with a grand meal. Classics like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are elevated with unique touches, like my Raspberry Champagne Cake, made with Prosecco in the batter and a luscious white chocolate buttercream.

And then there’s the personal connection. I’m not a mass producer, nor am I an industrial bakery. Each cake is custom-made for the couple who chooses it, with love and care in every detail. If someone asks me for a flavor I don’t typically offer, I’m happy to experiment, test new recipes, or even work with a recipe provided by the client—this often comes up for vegan options or specific dietary restrictions.

What I love most is seeing the reactions during tastings. The joy of savoring a slice of cake that’s homemade, crafted with love, is priceless. This isn’t just about dessert; it’s about creating moments, emotions, and flavors that leave a lasting impression. That’s what I aim to bring to weddings: an experience that blends beauty, taste, and love in every bite.

Over 26 years together, and we're more in love than ever.

Let me take you back to the unforgettable day when we celebrated my 50th birthday and our 20th wedding anniversary with Jacques, my Captain Handsome.

Thinking about that day still brings a tear to my eye and fills me with so much emotion.

We created an enchanted garden party in a private estate, where our friends were greeted by an impressive cake (taller than I am!), surrounded by flowering trees and adorned with thousands of delicate sugar pearls and flowers.

To make it even more magical, the cake rotated on a platform, spotlighted like a true star 🌟

Following my love for cake, I created an edible seating chart with four mini wedding cakes, each one with our guest’s names piped in royal icing.

And as if that weren’t enough, for the pre-dessert, we served salted caramel cream puffs in little birdcages; our friends were enchanted.

For the main dessert, we had my favorite carrot cake, baked with love by Jacques. In the end, we had two cakes: the grand one at the entrance and a three-tier cake that we cut at midnight.

And even after a long dinner filled with delicious courses, nothing could keep us off the dance floor. We danced our hearts out until 3 a.m., savoring every last moment of a night to remember.

Wrapping up the season in Portugal and packing my bags for Florida! I’m so excited to start working on some pretty epic wedding cakes in the sunshine state! Big things in the works…

I’m often asked about what tools I can’t live without, and if I have multiples for both countries. The answer is there are a LOT of things I can’t live without, and yes, I have to have a set in both Portugal and in the States so I can hop back and forth more easily when I’ve got cakes in either place. ( + top my list of must haves!)
