"OUR CHRISTMAS STORY" (*written by Ron in 2022)

‘Twas right before Christmas just five years ago, when Bill said he had a vision as we drove through the snow. We drove for an hour, then stopped for some gas, “where the hell are we?” I hated to ask, “I have something to show you” he said with a grin, then we got us some snacks and climbed back on in. Just down the street and off to the right, an abandoned old building stood still in the night. Some windows were broken and the doors had been chained, some old desks and chairs were all that remained. As long as the block and three stories tall, some dusty old chalkboards still hung on the wall. This was a school where children once roamed, he said “Its for sale, lets make this our home”... “you’ve got to be kidding me” I said with a gasp, “If your going to do this, I will kick your ass!” needless to say, I did see it’s charm, and long story short, he twisted my arm. The decision was made, and the realtor knew, it wouldn’t be easy, so we gathered a crew. Shovels in hand and dumpsters galore, we shoveled and scraped and we shoveled some more. We worked through the winter and throughout the night, with no damn heat and portable lights. We ripped up the floor, then we laid it back down, and soon there were whispers spreading through town, “the building has sold and is being restored” and soon it will reopen for all to explore. It took us awhile to get the place clean, and sometimes it felt like a horrible dream, but with friends by our side it made it quite fun and with all of their help it soon would be done. It wasn’t that easy but we finished by spring, and locals stopped by to see everything, “I used to go here” they all would say, when it was a school back in the day...
We opened the doors that Halloween, and the people that came were a sight to be seen. The old school was now a full Haunted House, and everyone came, even their spouse. The kids all had fun and we gave them a scare, so we did it again the very next year. But then something happened that gave us a fright, we lost a dear friend before Halloween night. Our friends gathered around and they said, Bill & Ron “Though the Spirit is gone, the Show must go on” so we rallied the troops and came up with a plan, Let’s make next year the best that we can. So we all came together and tried once again, and the people lined up just to get in. We were blessed that the haunt was again a success, and everyone always wished us the best. The next year was hard and we decided to sell and all of our friends were like “what the hell”, we saw the potential and then changed our minds, If we’re going to do this we need to rewind. There’s more we can do than just have a haunt, let’s give the people just what they want. But what can we give them that they want the most, to explore an old building and hunt for some ghosts? So we put the word out there, and to our surprise, interest in the building started to rise. Word has since spread, and the rumors are true, but we’ll leave it at that, it’s all up to you. So here we are now, five years have gone, and we couldn’t be more pleased with all we have done. There’s much more to do and to us all of you matter, so we’ll see you next year at Brodhead Manor.
(Merry Christmas...from Bill & Ron)

Well that’s a wrap.... We just had our last guests of the 2024 season this past weekend and now it’s time to pack up and close the building for the winter. 2024 was our busiest year so far for Paranormal Investigations, with teams coming in from all over the country. We were booked every weekend from April thru December! And we just want to Thank each and every one of you for making Brodhead Manor a part of your Paranormal Journey. We try our best to make your visit a memorable one!
We have met so many amazing people and love your appreciation for our establishment and what we are trying to accomplish here. Without your continuous support our goals for the building would not be met. Although there is still much to do as far as “Restoration” goes, with your help we can make this happen! Thank you all so much, and Special Thanks to all the teams that spare a little of their time to volunteer to help around the building, whether its just moving a box or pushing a broom, every little bit helps. We are so looking forward to what is in store for next year, and hope all of you are a part of that... See you in the Spring!
Much Love, Bill & Ron.

Home of the Screamatorium Haunted House

The over 100 year old structure began its life as the High School for Brodhead, WI. Building began in 1906 and opened in 1908, it later served as the main school for grades K through Twelve. It spent the last decade of its life as the Brodhead Middle School before closing in the summer of 1996 due to deterioration . It is still referred to as “the old Middle School” around town. Sitting mostly Abandoned for over 20 years, the Building has had multiple owners over the years with plans to renovate it into multi unit Apartments and community center. Unfortunately without proper funding none of these plans came to be. By 2012 the interior of the building had been stripped of anything of value in preparation for demolition. The building was spared and put up for sale in 2017 in one last effort to find the right buyer who could bring back some life to this Historic building...

Purchased in January, 2018 by a Joint Venture of private parties from Belvidere and Rockford, IL., new plans for the old middle school were underway. Clean-up of the building began Immediately, 6 dumpsters of debris left by previous owners demolition had to be removed first, all the broken and cracked windows were replaced, the roof was Temporarily repaired to stop all the leaks, and then every wall of the 60,000 sq. ft. building was scraped of chipping plaster and peeling paint. The 5,000 sq. ft. gymnasium wood floor, which was so warped it had bumps 2 foot high in it like waves, was taken apart piece by piece and re-installed flat again. By June of 2018 clean-up was complete, and building of the new “Haunted Attraction” began...

The building, now known as BRODHEAD MANOR (Brodhead Manor, Inc. Established 2018) Is the New Home of the “SCREAMATORIUM HAUNTED HOUSE” brought to you by R.I.P. Productions from Rockford, IL. with over 17 years in the Haunted House Business, they were Rated Number One Haunted Attraction in Illinois, in previous years. The new owners, not knowing if they could even open the first year, were ahead of schedule on the project and decided to Premiere the New “Screamatorium” in October of 2018 with Great Success! They reached their goal, with over 3,000 patrons for the season, including a one weekend only “Christmas Horror” in December. R.I. P. Productions plans to host more “Haunt” related events throughout the year, including Ghost Hunting Tours of the Historic Building. They are always on the lookout for new Actors for the Haunt, and also host Make-up and Special effects seminars.

Brodhead Manor, Inc. (property management) still has some work to do on the building before opening to the public for other events. The roof still needs to be permanently repaired, plumbing needs to be replaced, and the heating and a/c for the building needs to be addressed. The future plans for the building are to open the old gym as a Banquet Hall for Weddings, Receptions, Reunions, and even Live Bands on the 40 foot Stage! The plans also include a Main Office and Lobby area on the second floor, as well as an Art Studio and FX Studio that makes Halloween Props, Masks and Costumes. There will also be private apartments on the second and third floors. The last stage will be to open up the third floor, which will have a Large Conference/Luncheon Room and Rental Suites. The main focus of Brodhead Manor is to offer a Unique Experience for our Guests, with a “Horror” twist. We will offer themed events and weddings including Horror, Gothic, Victorian, Medieval, Renaissance and Steam Punk. Costume Rental and Makeup Artists will also be available! Other events planned for the building and property include a Scarecrow Festival and Carnival in the fall, a farmers market, car show, and craft fair!
