This week's 🌸Blooming in Brookings🌸 is inspired by The Nook!
(Extended version)
The Nook is a bookstore that opened downtown on February 4th, 2022📚
I had the pleasure of speaking with Laci, who is not only the owner of the Nook but also Pasque !I asked Laci about the inspiration behind her store, and she shared that the Nook was actually named after an area they created for her daughter at home called the book nook, a cozy space where she can sit and read. "I love books," says Laci, "and I wanted to create a place for people to relax, browse books, and escape." 🌈 She also wanted to create a space with a sense of community. Laci shared that some of her favorite moments have been seeing parents or grandparents with their little ones sitting on the sofa and reading after picking a good book together.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦📖
If you haven’t been inside the Nook yet, there’s a little bit of something for everyone, from the wide selection of books to beautiful stationery and many more unique gift items. My father-in-law is the proud owner of some very cool lawn-mowing socks found right here at the Nook. 🧦The romance section is the store's most popular area, with pens and stationary trailing closely behind. 🖊️📔 I asked Laci what her favorite thing in the store is right now, and she shared, "the nook of the Nook" is her favorite spot in the store, a cozy room with a long table surrounded by shelves of books for you to sit and read. This is also where they host their book club!📖
The book club started last fall and can be described as very relaxed. "There’s no cost or requirement; everyone is welcome." Every group is different as they like to choose different genres of books each month, so keep an eye out for something new to peak your interest! 📚
☀️Laci mentioned wanting a space with a sense of community, and the Nook is just that, a warm and welcoming space for anyone to come and escape for a bit and get lost in a good book in a relaxing environment. Whether you’re a college student taking a moment for yourself, a family looking for the perfect bedtime story, or even someone just starting your reading journey and need recommendations to get you started, look no further than the Nook!☀️

💐One of the first books I bought from the Nook was “Practice Makes Perfect” by Sarah Adams. I was immediately drawn to the cover and fitting enough it’s a book about a Flower shop owner😉💐 I used that book to inspire my color palette and saw it fit to use fun, yet romantic flowers such as peonies and spray roses. For me, Campanula is such a beautiful and happy flower and anytime I see a butterfly it always makes me smile. Those details for me resemble the happy and welcoming environment the Nook has created. And of course, the clear garden book vase that finishes this arrangement off 📚💐

The past two months have been a whirlwind at Flowers on Main, leaving little time for posts, but I'd like to reflect on some highlights along the way.📸

It’s always such a treat when the Miss Rodeo gals stop to visits and I’m so happy I’m able to provide flowers for these lovely ladies.🤠🌹
Did you know? Every weekend in April we had a different prom, keeping our fingers busy crafting numerous bouts, bouquets, and wrist corsages! 🤵🏼💃🏻
Mid-April brought a beautifully styled wedding photoshoot arranged by Hitch Studio. It was a pleasure getting to work alongside some very talented wedding professionals and I can't wait to share some of the stunning photos with you!💐👰🏻‍♀️🤵🏻‍♂️
Shortly after, I headed to McCrory Gardens to judge Floriculture for the State FFA convention. I had the privilege of presenting awards to some talented and passionate kids later that week.🥇

One of the highlights for me has been Blooming in Brookings. Meeting everyone and learning the stories behind their businesses has been immensely rewarding. May slipped by without any posts, but I'm excited to resume the series in June!🌸

🍾💐We started May with a Blooms & Bottles Class at Mosaic Wine Bar before diving into various SDSU graduation commitments. 💙💛And that was just the warm-up for Mother's Day week, a busy time at the flower shop!

Following Mother's Day, I dove headfirst into my first wedding of the season,💍 and then the focus shifted to Memorial Day. It's a point of pride for us to care for the gravesites of those who cannot, whether they're no longer able, moved out of the area or would simply prefer professional care. The meticulous effort involved in creating and placing everything at the cemetery is truly a labor of love.💙🌹

We wrap up our month as the official florist of the Miss South Dakota pageant. Witnessing the talent of these remarkable women and seeing their loved ones celebrate them with our flowers was incredibly humbling.💖

I've loved being able to branch out into our vibrant community and collaborate with so many different and amazing people. Now that things are slowing down and I can take it all in, I’m feeling overwhelmingly grateful, tired😅, and eager to keep growing with whatever the new season has to offer!🪴
Thank you for all the love and support you’ve given us along the way❤️🙏🏼

Stay tuned for new things blooming at Flowers on Main!👀

This week's 🌸Blooming in Brookings🌸 was inspired by Be Still Boutique ! Jeryn, the owner, first opened her storefront on April 1st, 2023. I asked Jeryn what her favorite memory has been so far, and she shared that her opening day is still her favorite memory to look back on. "It ended up being a nice spring day, and we were so busy." Other than that, no particular memory sticks out; "just seeing repeat customers come in and building relationships with them" has been one of her favorite parts. To celebrate Be Still's one-year anniversary, Jeryn has been hosting after-hours shopping nights! I went to the first one and can confirm it was a lot of fun. There was mini canvas painting, charcuterie and wine, you could make your own wine charm, and of course, the shopping. It was a great event to have fun with your girlfriends and celebrate the anniversary of one of our favorite shops downtown. 🎉🛍️🍷🎨
Something unique about Be Still is that you can find many items made by her family. I asked Jeryn what her favorite item in-store right now is, and she led me to a shelf of handmade candles made by her mom! Specifically, her favorite scent is Black Sea Teakwood. 🕯️She also carries plants grown by one of her sisters and has another sister who does embroidery. 🪴My sister recently became a mom, and I got her a really nice embroidered sweater from Be Still last Christmas, so knowing there's a personal touch of sisterly love in there makes it even more special. 👯‍♀️
Jeryn went to SDSU, majoring in Fashion with an Entrepreneur minor. She's definitely putting all that knowledge to good use! Jeryn has even spoken at some entrepreneur classes! Jeryn describes her store's aesthetic as airy, light, and inviting. "I want people to feel comfortable." Every detail was well thought out, from her color palette to wall art, and even down to the name. "Be Still" comes from a Bible verse that represents new life and also from the well-known quote, "Be still my heart," which has a feminine feel. The Olive Branch is a symbol for promise. In the heart of downtown Brookings, Be Still Boutique stands as a testament to creativity, family, and community. With its inviting atmosphere, beautiful clothing, and the personal touch of Jeryn and her family, it's more than just a store; it's a cherished destination where memories are made and friendships are cultivated! Next time you’re down town, be sure to stop by Be Still Boutique and wish Jeryn a happy one year downtown! 💗

This week's 🌸Blooming in Brookings🌸 was inspired by The Ugly Duckling !🦆
(Extended Version)
I got to chat with Karen, one of the co-owners, and thoroughly enjoyed browsing through all the unique items she carries. The U.D. first opened its doors back in 2015. If you haven’t visited before, Karen's and co-owner Rachael's shop is brimming with handcrafted and upcycled products. Karen shared that 95% of their inventory is handmade and with 30 different vendors, they offer everything from freeze dried treats to furniture.🪑🍬🕯️🖼️ As soon as I walked in, I was captivated by a gorgeous stained glass piece displayed in their front window (Hint for my husband reading this👀). The Ugly Duckling even offers stained glass classes, which I had the pleasure of looking in on. It was heartwarming to see so many happy faces excited to learn how to create their own stained glass pieces! I asked Karen what her current favorite item in store is and she pointed out a beautifully painted green piece of furniture by the checkout area. (Featured below📸) Their best-selling items are the 3D printed ones. (They are so cool!) Much of the furniture is upcycled from either Karen or Rachael. You might have spotted a few of their pieces around town. Next time you’re at Kool Beans☕️, check out their bar and tables – made by Karen and her husband, with some items upcycled from crates leftover from the SDSU President's house! The U.D. also offers custom framing, another thing you’ve probably seen in some of your favorite local businesses!
With such a unique store, I had to know what was the inspiration behind it all. Karen shared that it started with a photographer friend of hers who gave her an old door that she turned into a table. This sparked her love for upcycling furniture! One project turned into many and after a while she had friends telling her she needed to just open up her own store. That same friend who gave her the door ended up introducing her to her now business partner, Rachael! Beyond handmade items the U.D. also carries the materials needed to create your own work of art. Rachael is super knowledgeable about the paints they carry and both Karen and Rachel are great sources of knowledge for your next DIY project. 👩🏻‍🎨🪜🛏️
Karen shared her favorite memory since starting the business happened this past year when an SDSU football player brought in his unwashed championship jersey to be framed. “He was very polite, very respectful, yes ma’am, no ma’am. You could tell he wasn’t from around here”. Karen really enjoyed talking with him. “Sometimes the college kids can get a bad rep, especially with us being around all the bars, but that interaction touched my heart and left such a great impression”. 💙💛
💐With so many unique items in their store, it’s easy to feel inspired to take on a project of your own. I found myself smiling all week because I knew I had the perfect container for The Ugly Duckling. I was inspired to get creative and play with some paints and wires, making it as fun and unique as the items you can find in Karen and Rachael’s store! If you look closely, you'll see that I shaped some wire into a little duckling, and the script you see featured is actually all painted on an aspidistra leaf, great for holding paint color. I went through and dotted some floral paint throughout my flowers to carry out that hand crafted feel. 💐
My favorite part of these interviews is getting to talk with the owners, learning about their stories, and seeing their passion. I'm thankful for the inspiration and even more thankful for the friendships formed along the way. We have some truly great stores in our town, and the people running them are even greater! 🫶 Next time you’re downtown, be sure to stop by and check out all the handcrafted items The Ugly Duckling has to offer, and don’t hesitate to ask about any items that catch your eye!

🌸 Blooming in Brookings 🌸
(Extended post)
This week's Blooming in Brookings was inspired by Threads of Memories! I was thrilled to do this one because we often find ourselves at Threads of Memories for our flower designs. Most recently, we were there for a pair of old roller skates for a '50s-themed floral competition! 🛼One of our most passionate lines of work is sympathy arrangements. We love conducting traditional walk-in consultations or over-the-phone discussions to learn those special and heartfelt details about your loved one and incorporating them into our designs. We've had requests ranging from planes ("she was the first woman pilot in Brookings")✈️, ("They loved the Dukes of Hazzard"), to ("she used to collect tea cups")🫖. So, whether we're hunting for the perfect sentimental accent for an arrangement, a unique prop for a competition, or just something fun and out of the ordinary, I always find myself back at Threads for that hidden gem.

Since I find so much inspiration there regularly, I thought I'd do this week's arrangement a little differently. I asked Emily, the owner of Threads of Memory, to pick her favorite vase or container to use for a flower arrangement. She chose an old cookie jar that she's always liked.🫙🍪

Threads of Memories first opened back in 1987 by co-owners Patty Kratochvil and Carolyn Wakeman (Emily’s mom). Threads of Memories used to be an alteration and antique store as Patty was a great seamstress! 🪡🧵
Fun fact: Threads of Memories was the first business downtown to sell bags of coffee beans! There would be free coffee brewed for customers to enjoy, and to this day, you can still go in and grab a free cup of coffee. “It’s a way of honoring Patty and also supporting our local coffee shops,” says Emily.☕️

I asked what was one of her favorite memories since taking over the business back in January of 2021, and she shared that it reminds her of when she was in middle school and would come down to the shop and stamp the address on tickets for something to do. Being born and raised in Brookings, Emily shares that a lot of her vendors knew her when she was a kid! They’ve been able to form wonderful friendships and see each other as family. Since there’s always something different coming through the store, I asked Emily what her favorite item at the moment is, and she led me to the most gorgeous set of brass candle holders sitting on a shelf. “Anything brass I love and the granny blankets” which are pictured above! As far as a favorite item storewide, it changes with the season. Right now, she’s getting requests for garden items and blue and white china! 🍶(I’ve been seeing a lot of blue and white flowers and vase requests come through the shop as well, and I love it.)

If you’re looking for something unique or want something fun to do, stop by Threads of Memory at their new location 525 8th St S! One of my favorite things to do on a day off is getting a good cup of coffee and looking for hidden treasures over at Threads. There’s always such cool and unique items to look through, and whether it be Emily or one of her vendors, there's always someone there who is knowledgeable and passionate about the items throughout the store. “Every piece tells a story,” shares Emily, and you’ll have to stop in and see all of the Threads of Memories sprinkled throughout her store.🤍🪡💐

🌸 Blooming in Brookings 🌸
(Extended post)
This weeks Blooming in Brookings was inspired by The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. ! The Carrot Seed first opened its doors back in June of 2015. During my visit, I had the chance to chat with Lauren, the store manager. I asked her about her favorite product in store and the shop's overall favorites. She shared that her personal favorite is the Pear Balsamic Vinegar (understandable, it's delicious), and the top-selling items in the store are a toss-up between cookie cutters and coffee beans. 🍪☕️Coincidentally, it was my birthday week when I visited, so I got to pick out a free cookie cutter. Can you guess what shape I chose? 👀🌼
A fun fact about Carrotseed is that they were previously located in the building right next door. During the move, they realized that some items were too big to fit through the door, so they ended up cutting a hole in the wall between both shops!
Lauren also mentioned that one of her favorite parts of working at Carrotseed is interacting with all the people who come in and being able to establish many friendships. "I was new to town when I first started working here, and I was able to make so many friends among coworkers and customers."
Originally, I thought of making a fun Easter or carrot-inspired arrangement, playing off the shop's name and the beautiful stained glass feature above their front door, which was actually made by Kirsten, the owner, and her grandmother.🥕However, upon further investigation, Carrotseed is launching their Olivelle Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinegars on tap this weekend! If you haven’t experienced all the different flavor combinations yet, you definitely need to stop in and sample a few. My current favorites are the Green Chile Oil and Pear Balsamic.🫑🍐
When I walked into Carrotseed and saw all the rows of different flavored barrels of oils and balsamic vinegars, I was immediately inspired to create a Della Robbia-styled arrangement! Here’s a quick Art History lesson👨🏻‍🎨: Luca Della Robbia, an Italian sculptor from the late 15th century, incorporated fruits and vegetables into the borders of his sculptures. The concept of that style of artwork has been applied to many aspects of design, including floral. (It has recently been trending, especially in Christmas decor.) I wanted to design an arrangement that portrays the freshness of olive oils as well as the bright, rich flavors of balsamic vinegars. In my arrangement, I incorporated both fresh and permanent stems, utilizing olive branches and permanent fruit to accentuate the vibrant and fresh color palette of the flowers. 🍑🫒🍐💐

My visit to Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. was an inspiring adventure filled with flavorful discoveries and warm connections. From the various culinary items to the welcoming atmosphere fostering friendships, every moment was brimming with creativity!

Be sure to stop in this weekend for the launch of their Olivelle Oils and Balsamic Vinegars on tap!

🌸 Blooming in Brookings 🌸
This week's source of inspiration came from Cook's Kitchen! Fun fact: This is where I came up with the idea to do “Blooming in Brookings”! I was sitting down having breakfast one Sunday, and my eye kept getting drawn to this beautiful painting hanging above one of the booths. I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I could make that arrangement and bring it to Cook’s as a gift?!” Unfortunately, they can’t keep flowers in their restaurant for allergy reasons, so we will be donating the arrangement to one of our beloved nursing homes in town 🫶💐
I was able to talk with the team over at Cook’s and learn a little more about one of our town's favorite restaurants. They've done some digging as to when Cook’s was originally established, and they were able to find a plaque dated from 1947! Ilene, the previous owner of Flowers on Main, says she remembers eating at Cooks back when she was in high school! They shared that breakfast is their busiest time of the day. 🍳🥞 The top three favorites right now are: The classic (my personal go-to👀), The Skillet, and the Country Fried Steak with eggs! You can check out their menu on Facebook if you want to see what other delicious items are on there.🤤
With a staff of 10, everyone working at Cooks is “one big family,” says one of their employees. There’s nothing better than good food with good people, and you can find both of those things over at Cook’s Kitchen in Downtown Brookings!
