Most hummingbird feeders grow mold faster than the birds can empty them.

In warm weather, the sugar water inside a feeder begins to ferment in about three days. By day five, it can grow black mold, bacteria, and yeast colonies that are invisible at the surface but present in the liquid.

A ruby-throated hummingbird drinks from the feeder dozens of times a day. Each visit is a dose.

🌿 The signs most people miss:

Cloudy water. A faint sour smell when you open the ports. A thin film on the inside of the glass. Dark residue in the feeding ports or around the base.

By the time you see black spots, the contamination has been building for days.

🐦 The fix that works:

Change the sugar water every three days in warm weather. Every two days above ninety degrees. Every five to seven days in cool spring weather.

Use four parts water to one part white sugar. No red dye. No honey — honey ferments faster and can grow a fungus that's fatal to hummingbirds.

Clean the feeder with hot water and a bottle brush each time you refill. A dilute vinegar rinse once a week handles what the brush can't reach.

🔑 The shortcut:

Fill the feeder only halfway. It empties faster, gets changed more often, and never sits long enough to turn.

She weighs three grams. The mold you can't see is enough.

A clean feeder is the cheapest, simplest thing you can offer. And it matters more than the feeder itself.

**Thursday, Tavern open 4-10pm. Pierce Dipner Blues Band rocks the Tavern @ 7pm. EB Wingz returns (we were so impressed we had them return for the NRF) serving up delicious wings, smash burgers and more, 5-9pm.
**Friday, Tavern open 4-10pm. K**b Road rocks the patio stage @ 7pm. BRT Scratch Kitchen serves up delicious Pizza Pies and more, 5-9pm.
**Saturday, Tavern open 11am-10pm. The Wolf Tones jams on the patio stage @ 3pm followed by Hybrid Vigor @ 7pm. BRT Scratch Kitchen and Chef Lyndsey, Food by Lyndsey, serves up a delicious festival menu, serving 12-7pm.
**Sunday, Tavern open 11am-10:30pm. The Sweaty Already String Band jams on the patio stage @ 3pm followed by Built For Speed @ 7pm. Fireworks @ dusk adjacent to the BRT Patio. BRT Scratch Kitchen and Chef Lyndsey, Food by Lyndsey, serves up a delicious festival menu, serving 12-7pm.
**Pints, Spirits, Wine, NA options and more available all weekend. The NRF is a free and family friendly festival offering tons of family fun, celebrating the people, towns and history built upon the National Road.
