I arrived at Live Well Farm on Saturday to set up a small wedding for the nicest couple. I knew the tables would be dressed and ready for flowers when I arrived, but I was thrilled to see the finishes they chose. It's the small details that make the biggest impact. I felt inspired (and relieved) the second I walked into the tent.

The wedding flower color palette leaned on rich neutrals and heavy texture--rich browns, rusty oranges with accents of mauve and plum. I incorporated lots of grasses, dangling Northern Sea Oats, bronze Hanging Amaranthus and the jagged leaves of burgundy/red Hibiscus 'Mahogany Splendor'. I designed this wedding around the types of plants and flowers that would be peaking by early October. The arrangements were small but packed full of texture and rich color. I knew there was a chance the flowers could look busy depending on the selections the couple made for the decor, but was relieved to see what they had waiting for me.

The table settings the couple chose were the perfect neutral backdrop for the flowers- the stemware and plates had clean lines and smooth edges. The candlesticks were a creamy taupe color with matte metallic bronze holders that matched the flatware. The wooden cross back chairs added warmth and a natural element to the tables. Finally, the white table linens were simple- no ornate patterns or texture to compete with.

These finishes were simple, sophisticated choices that instantly elevated the look of the reception by providing balance and contrast with the rich colors and textures of the flower arrangements.

I've started to import more flowers from the Dutch market to add more variety to my arrangements, but the local Dahlias are still stars of the show.

It was a slow start to the Dahlia season (with the heat and dry weather we had this summer), but they're abundant now!

I've been wanting some kind of standing stone for the front garden bed and now we have one. Norton Stoneworks installed this gorgeous antique stone with textured ribbing- marks left behind from when the rock was split long ago.

The stone is tucked in amongst mature deciduous shrubs, dahlias and grasses. When the hard frost hits and the leaves have all died back, it will be standing next to the long arching branches of a Yellow Twig Dogwood. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Yesterday, a family hosted a beautiful Memorial Service at The Lemont Block. It was an absolutely perfect, warm September day. The bright sun was pouring into the space and casting shadows all around.

I wanted the flowers to reflect the beautiful life of someone who loved nature, people and animals. I wanted the flowers to feel alive and hopeful, but not somber.

September is a transitional month. The colors in the garden start to change. It felt fitting to use locally grown flowers that reflected this change. Symbolic, almost.

Thanks to Falmouthtown Flower Co. , Ethel’s ME and Grounded Seed Flower Farm I was able to pull together some beautiful Maine grown rosy peach 'Rose Toscano' Dahlias, rosy Hydrangea and ruffly peach Lisianthus to capture the warmth of the transitioning season.

The Main Lounge at Moulton Union is a beautiful reception space with original dark wood paneling and a massive stone fireplace. For any event there, the objective is to add color to brighten up the room. For this event, in particular, the college chose to focus attention to the mantle with the addition of lush greenery and flowers.

Featuring Dahlias from Falmouthtown Flower Co. in Falmouth, Lisianthus from On the Mountain Farm in Warren and Hanging Green Amaranthus from Suncatcher Farm in Brunswick.

Marigolds weren't ever really on my radar until I saw local farms growing them as a cut flower. There are so many varieties- beyond the bright orange color you may be used to seeing. These yellow Marigolds were grown by Bumbleroot Organic Farm. Their fragrance is so fresh, they have a dense fluffy texture and they last!

Asclepias grown by Chase's Daily Restaurant in Belfast Maine, Ninebark grown by On the Mountain Farm, 'Karma Fox Maroon' Dahlias grown by Broadturn Farm and Blackberry branches from Carolyn Snell
