Mother's Day is less than a month away! Last year, spring was further along than we are now- currently, it's looking like we're about 2 weeks behind. Here's hoping the weather warms up enough to produce lots of Maine grown flowers in time for the holiday.
A few samples from last Mother's Day.

Buying Maine grown and supporting our local economy is something I love to do during the growing season (beginning in April/May through early October). The rest of the year, I rely on imported flowers- especially from the Dutch flower market because of their wide selection and impeccable quality. The recent tariffs will impact my business and many others, but in a few short months I'll be able to switch gears and start sourcing locally again.

Travel during the month of March gives me the boost I need to power through to spring. When I come back home, I feel invigorated. It was a treat to visit Sorrento, Italy and explore the area along the coast but I didn't expect to be completely captivated by the archeological ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

At Pease Hill Farm in Monmouth, Maine, Kim and Chris Brawn are changing the game for winter flowers by growing tulips in a heated greenhouse. They produce an impressive 54,000 tulips annually from January to May in a cozy 18x35-foot space. This innovative approach fills the gap in Maine’s flower availability during the off-season, which is usually covered by imported Dutch tulips.

I’m excited to offer their locally grown tulips from February through April, giving our customers the chance to enjoy the beauty of Maine-grown flowers even in the winter months. It’s a wonderful way to connect with local agriculture while adding some fresh spring color to the season.

Some beautiful Dutch flowers arriving for Valentine's Day...including these stunning 'Double Ellen Pink' Hellebores.

They require extra care when processing, so I typically save them for last. They've traveled a long way from the Netherlands to my door. The first thing I do is strip off any excess foliage. I boil some water, grab a sharp knife and get to work scoring the length of the stems and cutting the bottom at a sharp angle. I then dip the the stems hot water to shock them into waking up, then submerge the stems in a vase of warm water. The goal is to get the stems to firm up. Most do, but some stems can be stubborn. I'll repeat the process if necessary to see if that will help. Once they've firmed up, I'll put them in fresh water and into the cooler at 38-40 degrees.

It's not often a wedding photographer has time to get great shots of reception tables before everyone is seated... let alone with sparkling natural light. Thank you, Stacy Bengs Photography for capturing all of these sweet details and textures from Sammi and John's wedding last October.

More to come.

I arrived at Live Well Farm on Saturday to set up a small wedding for the nicest couple. I knew the tables would be dressed and ready for flowers when I arrived, but I was thrilled to see the finishes they chose. It's the small details that make the biggest impact. I felt inspired (and relieved) the second I walked into the tent.

The wedding flower color palette leaned on rich neutrals and heavy texture--rich browns, rusty oranges with accents of mauve and plum. I incorporated lots of grasses, dangling Northern Sea Oats, bronze Hanging Amaranthus and the jagged leaves of burgundy/red Hibiscus 'Mahogany Splendor'. I designed this wedding around the types of plants and flowers that would be peaking by early October. The arrangements were small but packed full of texture and rich color. I knew there was a chance the flowers could look busy depending on the selections the couple made for the decor, but was relieved to see what they had waiting for me.

The table settings the couple chose were the perfect neutral backdrop for the flowers- the stemware and plates had clean lines and smooth edges. The candlesticks were a creamy taupe color with matte metallic bronze holders that matched the flatware. The wooden cross back chairs added warmth and a natural element to the tables. Finally, the white table linens were simple- no ornate patterns or texture to compete with.

These finishes were simple, sophisticated choices that instantly elevated the look of the reception by providing balance and contrast with the rich colors and textures of the flower arrangements.

I've started to import more flowers from the Dutch market to add more variety to my arrangements, but the local Dahlias are still stars of the show.

It was a slow start to the Dahlia season (with the heat and dry weather we had this summer), but they're abundant now!
