Happy Esther Link Night! Who?
Buffalonians know our hometown concert hall, Kleinhans Music Hall, is an acoustical and architectural marvel, but most people don’t know how close we came to losing it or the remarkable woman who saved the day. We credit the Saarinens for their masterful design, but without the hall’s first acting director, Esther Link, the Saarinens wouldn’t have even been hired.
By the late summer of 1938, the people in charge of creating the new Kleinhans Music Hall were in a quandary. They had already hired local architects, the Kidd brothers, to design the new hall, but they had also decided they wanted a new modern building, and Modern was not the Kidds' specialty. The name Eliel Saarinen quickly became the top choice for “consulting architect,” but he would only come on board if they hired him to draw up new designs, not as a consultant.
No one thought they could afford two design architects, so on October 8th, 1938, Ed Letchworth, the main Kleinhans Hall guy, prepared to tell Eliel the bad news.
Fortunately for us, Esther Link wasn’t about to give up.
That night 78 years ago, Saturday, October 8th, 1938, Esther worked into the early morning hours crafting the letter that would convince Letchworth and the rest of the Governing Board of the Buffalo Foundation to do anything they could to work out a solution to get Saarinen on board as the designer of Kleinhans Music Hall. She suggested that Eliel be hired as a designing architect with the Kidds and explained that a Saarinen design would bring Buffalo a beautiful monument worthy of national renown. As for the extra money, Esther sat down with her family that same night and convinced them to pony up $10,000 to bring Saarinen on board. (By the way, that's almost $170,000 in today's dollars.)
The next morning, Sunday, October 9th, Esther came to Letchworth with the letter in hand and convinced him to keep trying and to not give up yet. He thought it was a tremendous letter, and they took it to George Rand, the guy in charge of the Foundation. Rand agreed and went out to persuade the City Leaders. It was enough to convince the others to at least invite Saarinen to Buffalo for a discussion and pay him for his design.
The rest is history – and present – and future. Thanks to Esther Link, thousands and thousands of people still get to experience this acoustical and architectural marvel every year.
So, in honor of Esther Link and her determination, problem-solving skills, powers of persuasion, and downright heart, I make sure to keep her in mind the night of October 8th and celebrate Esther Link Night!
Thank you, Esther, and here's to all the people of the world who stay up late writing heart-felt letters and somehow make the world a better place by not giving up!
- Lauren Becker, Klenhans Music Hall Archivist
