An update on the Commander Bees from Beekeeper Liz!

As in most aspects in life, moderation is key. Too much of anything is not a good thing.
Rain keeps honey bees inside the hive so they do less foraging. Although, bees can still fly during light showers, but not in heavy rain. Even with favorable temperature and sunlight, rain and wind speed above 15 mph can cause honeybees to stop foraging.
Rain is the enemy when they are harvesting nectar. Rain dilutes the nectar in flowers to be unusable to bees and so they wait for the nectar to be of sufficient strength and then go out and harvest.
Too much rain also affects the flowering process. When the roots are in very wet soil they are prone to mold and become weak, then that part of the honey crop would fall short.
The ‘robbing’ season was particularly busy this year as many hives were experiencing lack of honey production. This is when weaker hives will ‘rob’ the honey from healthier hives in order to stay alive.
During this time, the male bees or (Drones) will be kicked out of the hive when stock is low. They are twice the size of the ladies so they eat twice as much and all they do is hang around the hive, do not forage, eat honey and mate w the queen. My second video is one of our ladies kicking out a Drone. He kept coming back and got kicked out every time, it was funny to see it in action. I’ve been seeing more drones outside of the hive hanging around cause they are not being let back in.
P.S.-A guest donated a honeybee book to my collection this week. Lisa spoke with her and she was very excited to learn we had bees of our own as she was a beekeeper herself. Just wanted to share the kind gesture.
