Area residents are encouraged to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the following activities suggested by the Canton Community.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools and Canton Township recognize the unique overlap of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., Day and the U.S. Presidential Inauguration in 2025. In light of this, area families and residents are encouraged to honor Dr. King’s legacy by embracing this important opportunity for civic engagement and family education in a way that is meaningful to them on January 20, 2025. Suggested activities to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. include:

• Apply for a Scholarship: Seniors attending P-CCS high schools are encouraged to apply for the MLK Essay Scholarship. All entries are due by January 24, 2025. The winner will be awarded a college scholarship sponsored by College Tutors of Canton and will have the opportunity to present their essay in front of Canton Township and P-CCS school officials. More information and the essay prompt can be received from students’ school counselors.

• Visit the Canton Story Trail: The Heritage Park Story Trail will feature “When Martin Luther King Jr. Wore Roller Skates” by Mark Weakland all month long in January. This family-friendly story trail is in Canton’s Heritage Park, located behind the Canton Administration Building, 1150 S. Canton Center Road.

• Attend an MLK Day March: Plymouth-Canton’s Interfaith Community Outreach will be hosting its annual MLK March on January 20 from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the Canton Public Library, located at 1200 S. Canton Center Road in Canton.

• Donate Food or Clothing to a Local Organization: Dr. King’s legacy shows us that when everyone works together and supports one another, we can make a better world for future generations.

• Learn about our Nation’s History: Local libraries and internet searches can provide a wealth of resources to use to learn about the past and can be a great tool to help put things in perspective.

• Watch the famous “I Have a Dream” Speech: Experience the iconic words of Dr. King that were delivered 63 years ago online to remember the man who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his dedication to civil rights and social justice.

• Start a Dialogue with Family and Friends: Consider how someone like Dr. King would have an impact on our current generation.
