It’s about time I report on the MSGRS Fall/Winter Slalom Series held on November 3rd at GHS in Gluckstadt, MS.

We had a great day of single lane slalom racing. We were faced, literally, with a strong headwind coming at us across the smooth parking lot. The course was loose but with a couple of big offsets. This offered challenges for all participants. We met one of our original goals for the race series on or opening event. Our old friend from Byrddogz Luke Johns came out to give slalom a try and try he did. Turns out Luke is somewhat a natural as he bettered all entrants in this event. Way to show up and do the work Luke. Chris Larson was there and was sporting his new Norski Pavel. He’s been tweaking setups to get it where he wants it so this day was a bit experimental. That deck is amazing. Jeff Jefferies was there taking a short break from fatherhood. Jeff was improving with every run. Ol’ Clifton “Raddog” Jennings was there keeping time for us. He’s not quite ready to jump back on his board but he’s getting close. His metallic blue 2004 Ick Stik Carrera has been refreshed and it’s ready to roll. Beautiful board.

So we had Luke taking first in the 31-45 Novice class with Chris in second. I took the top spot in the 45 & Over Novice class with Jeff taking the win in the 21-30 Novice group. 😊So they each have a jump start on gaining points for the overall series points win.

Our next race will be on December 1st at Germantown High on Calhoun Parkway in Gluckstadt. We’ll be racing as close to 1:30 as we can giving time for set up. We’ll race until everyone gets their four runs in and then some.

If you’ve ever wanted to try slalom, use to slalom and would like to see if you’ve still got it or simply want to come see what all the fuss is about be at GHS next Sunday afternoon.

Mississippi Grass Roots Slaloms very own Sarah Byrd Compton and Josh Byrd are soon to return to the US after representing the United Stares in the 2024 World Skate Games. Sarah Bc is bringing home a 17th overall and Josh Byrd returns with a 16th overall. The field was the most talented group of athletes ever assembled for a slalom skateboard competition on the planet. Ever! Team MSGRS/RKR did a great job and we look forward to them representing once again at the US Nationals taking place in Nashville in early November.
Way to go guys!

Josh Byrd and Sarah Bc have spent the week adjusting to life in Italy and today it’s down to business.
It’s practice day on the actual race hills with time on each course. I understand from on hill reports that the tight is indeed tight, hybrid is a bit tight with some tricky offsets and the giant slalom course is on the tight side for GS. The runouts are good with little scare factor.
Tomorrow will begin the competition with GS, then Hybrid on Friday and Tight on Saturday which just happens to be Josh’s birthday!
Saturday will be live streamed at worldskate.tv. You’ll need to sign up but you should not be asked for any type of payment. There’s been some pay sites popping up. Beware, those aren’t real.
Thank you to everyone that supported Josh and Sarah in any way. It hard to grasp that a fun little activity we started playing around with way back in 2001 or so has turned into both of them, together, competing in the World Skate Games in Italy representing the United States. Go USA!!
