Farm Talk Tuesday 🚜 πŸ“» 🌽: Dried Flowers!
I can't get enough of the beauty of dried flowers! We put a lot of effort at the farm to preserve as many blooms as possible through drying, pressing, and seed saving. Zinnias, celosia, cosmos, marigolds, lisianthus, snapdragons, and rudbeckia work great with these methods.
Drying flowers is one of the most straightforward and time-efficient techniques. Gather the flowers together, secure them with a rubber band at the stems, and hang them upside down in the house (I like to do mine in the attic) for about two weeks, which usually does the trick. The best part? These dried beauties last for several seasons if you take care of them. I've crafted marigold garlands and unique backdrops using this dried flower method. Dried flowers are not only stunning, but they're also budget-friendly and can bring some cheer to your space during the long winter months! Here are some pics of our dried flower process.

Farm Talk Tuesday 🚜 πŸ“» 🌽
This week's Farm Talk is on... Salsa! Or rather, how to quickly use all the excess peppers and tomatoes from the garden in a short time. I had an entire counter full of them and needed to get rid of them ASAP. You can only freeze so much before you run out of freezer space. I found this recipe from my FAVORITE lady, Jess at Roots and Refuge Farm YouTube channel. She is the one who taught me how to sow my first seeds, but that's a story for another farm talk time. Check out the YouTube link below! I made this salsa last week. It was delicious and easy to make. It is now my go-to when I am short on time and long on tomatoes and peppers! Enjoy!

Have you noticed fewer monarchs fluttering around this summer? You're not alone. Volunteers across Wisconsin, part of the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, have reported lower numbers of monarchs during their July counts compared to previous years.

This citizen science effort, in partnership with the Monarch Joint Venture and the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum, tracks monarch eggs and larvae and their habitats across North America. While 2023 saw an increase in monarchs per milkweed, 2024's numbers have dropped.

Our Executive Director, Wendy Caldwell, highlights that these seasonal counts are essential but only tell part of the story. A more accurate picture will become more apparent this winter as monarchs gather at their overwintering sites.

We need your help! You can make a difference by planting native milkweed and native flowers. Every bit of habitat counts in supporting these incredible creatures.

Big thanks to Anna Marie Yanny from Wisconsin Public Radio for sharing this important story!
