We’re repurposing old window frames that came out of our house as cold frames to try to bump up the temperature just a smidge so roots don’t totally freeze. Found this spring relic on one of them and tracked down where it was made: Manufactured in the 1800’s were window sash springs. Harvey Hammond obtained a patent for his window springs in 1837. In 1838, they were installed in the White House in Washington, D.C. By 1844, Hammond was producing 30,000 – 40,000 window springs annually. W. S. Hammond took over the business in later years and continued producing window springs through the 1890’s. These springs are still in use in many of the older homes in the Lewisberry area and elsewhere.

The dry weather has certainly made digging up dahlias much easier! I’m going to leave one row in the ground to see how they overwinter 😬 but with temperatures hitting 80 here last week it may be a worthwhile gamble. Only time will tell!

Fall is here and that means planting for spring! We’re planting James Mann peonies. Introduced during the Arts and Crafts era, when our house was built, this type has a romantically “loose and fluffy” form. Its name honors an Illinois congressman who championed women’s rights – and loved peonies.
