Cicada Tree Damage Protection Service

Do you have a small tree that is smaller than 2 inches in diameter? Do you have treasured shrubs, such as roses or serviceberries?

Protect your investment 🌳🌹

Kinch Design is offering a service to locals where our team can come out and wrap your young trees to protect them from the cicadas that are emerging in May. After about 6 weeks we will then come back and remove all netting and assess your trees and shrubs. However, our list is filling up, so we suggest contacting us soon. Please PM us or text Diane at 630-338-7951.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) offers the Restore the Canopy program to restore our region’s tree canopy and reduce the chances of future flooding. Various kinds of native saplings (such as native red, pin, swamp white, bur, and black oak) are available for free to Cook County residents, community groups and schools.

Visit one of six water reclamation plants to pick up your free saplings. Pickup is available every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon from April through October.

For more information and to see the locations where saplings are available, visit https://mwrd.org/community-action/native-landscaping/restore-canopy.

Happy National Gardening Day 🪴

Today is the day to get your hands dirty! Whether you have your own yard, a small balcony or just a window with sunshine and a container, there are so many ways to grow your own little oasis.

Gardening is not only a relaxing hobby, but it also has many benefits for our health and environment. Tending to plants can reduce stress, improve air quality, and provide us with fresh, nutritious produce.

So, on this special day, why not plan a gardening activity? You could plant some new flowers or herbs, tend to your vegetable patch, or simply spend some time weeding and mulching. Gardening is a wonderful way to get outside, get a little exercise, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

Illinois, read The Morton Arboretum’s tips for protecting your trees from cicadas this spring.

While some cicadas will be emerging across the U.S., a rare occurrence of both the both the 13-year and 17-year cicadas will overlap in central Illinois and Eastern Iowa this May. Periodical cicadas threaten smaller, young trees and older or stressed ones. While not harmful to people or healthy mature trees, the female cicadas' egg-laying process can cause serious harm. The Morton Arboretum shared tips to protect younger, more vulnerable trees.

🌳 Ensure tree health in spring with mulching, watering, and addressing any disease issues.

🌳 Cover susceptible trees and shrubs with fine netting before cicadas arrive, and remove it after the emergence event.

🌳 Consider delaying planting young trees until after cicada activity ceases.

🌳 Avoid insecticides – netting is the best protection.

Remember, despite the noise, cicadas offer benefits like natural fertilization and composting. For more expert advice, visit mortonarb.org/cicadas.

Absolutely crushing… Why does Palatine school district feel entitled to the refund to the tune of $209,000? The business already paid their taxes while they were in business! The county tax assessor admitted they messed up. No apology or additional compensation from cook county for the fact we had to close our multi genrerational family business due to their “MISTAKE!” Refund should be given back in full. Palatine school district in essence stole. In fact, the school district lawyer said to the family “We will give you $80,000.00 of the total refund if you drop the law suit.” What???!!!! Plus all monies owed back to the family? The tax assessor is still making them jump through hoops in the court system. Could be years! Does anybody have any ideas of how the family can fight this better?

After receiving a sky-high and incorrect property tax assessment, a suburban family said they were nearly bankrupted by paying their taxes, lost their third...

I’ve only seen my husband cry a few times. We’ve been together for close to 20 years. Kinsch Village Florist & Garden Center was his family legacy since 1938 — that the Cook County tax accessor forced their hand to close. The family did provide a lot of documentation and photos. We’ve been fighting and went through several appeals with no luck... I do not understand why all the big corporations get the tax breaks in this state and it’s the small mom and pop businesses that are being run out and still expected to foot the bill. After two years of fighting the cook county tax assessor, the family has decided to go public with their story. It may be too late for our garden center. But maybe it will help other small businesses battle the unfairness. The closing divided our family. The flowershop was able to move down the street and is now owned and operated by Ken’s sister. However, the garden center was unable to continue, a division that Ken and I oversaw.. I always believed in fairness. But now I am disappointed, angry and tired. Please help spread this clip so maybe, who knows, it will reach the right people that can advocate for the small businesses in Illinois. Especially Cook Conunty! Thank you, we truly miss and appreciate all those that have supported us through the years.

A third-generation garden business says a change in how Cook County assessed their property taxes has put them out of business.
